{"id":316962,"date":"2018-05-04T10:29:32","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T14:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=316962"},"modified":"2018-05-08T12:31:57","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T16:31:57","slug":"student-engineers-help-kids-with-disabilities-walk-play-peers-316962","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/student-engineers-help-kids-with-disabilities-walk-play-peers-316962\/","title":{"rendered":"Student engineers help kids with disabilities walk, play with peers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Making their mark: This is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/news\/class-of-2018\/\">\u00a0one in a series<\/a>\u00a0of profiles celebrating members of Rochester\u2019s graduating class of 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For young children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental disabilities, learning to walk can be a long-term process. And in the meantime, the children find it hard to keep up with their peers, which increases their social isolation.<\/p>\n<p>A team of biomedical engineering majors, working with Leah Talbot, a Rochester area physical therapist, believes it can address both issues with an inexpensive, \u201chybrid\u201d walker that will be portable enough to accompany the children wherever they go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is right up our alley,\u201d says Joe Cappotelli \u201918, whose senior design project teammates are Hyun Choi \u201918, Devon Foggio \u201918, and Daniel Myers \u201918. \u201cWe\u2019re all in the biomechanics track of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/\">biomedical engineering<\/a>. And it\u2019s a fun project, to be able to think about ways we could help these children in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the team surveyed what is currently available, they found \u201cgo-baby-go\u201d cars \u2014 ordinary toy cars turned into personalized vehicles for young children with disabilities. These enable the 3- to 5-year-olds to keep up with their peers, but aren\u2019t that helpful from a therapeutic standpoint, because they don\u2019t require the children to actually propel themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Walkers used in clinical settings, on the other hand, are often bulky and expensive: great for therapy, but not for keeping up with more mobile playmates, or for taking home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve created sort of a hybrid of the two,\u201d says Myers. \u201cThis allows them to move around but also practice walking at the same time.\u201d And, Foggio adds, at a more reasonable cost compared to the therapeutic devices used in clinical settings, which range from $700 to $1,200. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For their initial prototype, the students worked with penciled sketches and parts scavenged from play vehicles. \u201cWe had good ideas for each of components independently, but the struggle was getting everything to work together,\u201d Myers says. The final steering column, for example, was designed with CAD drawings, then fabricated with 3D printing.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second year that Talbot has worked with a biomedical engineering senior design team on a project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year\u2019s project was a treadmill with partial body weight support that I had heard about at a conference and was interested in trying with some of the children on my caseload,\u201d Talbot says.\u00a0 \u201cWhen I spoke with the presenter at the conference, she suggested the possibility of contacting a local university\u2019s engineering department, as they are often looking for interesting projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s team \u201chas definitely come up with a very unique idea to help children with motor delays learn to walk in a fun and active way,\u201d Talbot says.\u00a0 \u201cIdeally this motorized walker will allow these children to access their environment to play with their peers while improving their cognitive, motor, and social skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its current iteration, the walker could fit into an SUV, team members say. With further modifications, they hope, it will fit in the trunk of a car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully we can make it affordable enough so that children could practice on them in a clinicians\u2019 office, but their parents also could purchase them for the children to use at home,\u201d Cappotelli says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For young children with developmental disabilities, learning to walk can be a long-term process.
