{"id":343102,"date":"2018-10-10T13:14:11","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T17:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=343102"},"modified":"2025-11-19T15:48:53","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T20:48:53","slug":"center-of-excellence-343102","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/center-of-excellence-343102\/","title":{"rendered":"Center of Excellence funds local businesses improving health care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four grants from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/coe\/researchers.html\">Center of Excellence (CoE) in Data Science<\/a> are helping local companies translate the cutting-edge science of University of Rochester researchers into improved health care, while also benefiting the region\u2019s economy and creating jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking for the best research we can get, but there\u2019s a baseline economic impact that has to be there,\u201d says Walter Johnson, CoE\u2019 s executive director.<\/p>\n<p>The grants, ranging from $25,000 to $94,000, will help fund these projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/22230140-geunyoung-yoon\">Geunyoung Yoon<\/a>, professor of ophthalmology, is developing a Brillouin scattering microscope for Clerio Vision Inc., a startup that is using a new femtosecond laser technology to noninvasively write vision correction into contact lenses, intraocular lenses and even directly into the cornea. The microscope will enable three-dimensional modeling of the individual characteristics of a patient\u2019s cornea or soft contact lenses.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/labs\/mcgrath.aspx\">James McGrath<\/a>, professor of biomedical engineering, is working with SiMPore, a manufacturer of ultrathin silicon-based membranes first developed in his lab, to model a new filtration technique to improve the process of developing virus-based medical products.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/people\/faculty\/rolland_jannick\/index.html\">Jannick Rolland<\/a>, the Brian J. Thompson Professor of Optical Engineering, is working with LighTopTech, a company she cofounded, on developing a spectrometer to increase the imaging speed of a new technology the company uses to noninvasively biopsy tissue as it is removed during an operation, reducing the need for patients to return for another operation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/23208919-steven-e-feldon\">Steven Feldon<\/a>, director of the Flaum Eye Institute and professor of ophthalmology, is working with Envision Solutions LLC to test the effectiveness of a new visual training technique to restore vision in stroke victims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Center of Excellence is housed at the University of Rochester\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/\">Goergen Institute of Data Science<\/a> and is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/esd.ny.gov\/nystar\/default.asp\">New York State Division of Science Technology and Innovation<\/a> (NYSTAR). The goal is to help drive regional economic development by supporting basic research, training, and technology development.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the projects are also receiving funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceis.rochester.edu\/\">Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences<\/a> (CEIS), also located the University of Rochester. CEIS, one of 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/esd.ny.gov\/centers-advanced-technology\">New York State Centers for Advanced Technology<\/a>, is also supported by NYSTAR, and typically provides a 50 percent match for funds that companies provide to support research projects with university researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The two centers have developed a \u201cfabulous cooperation\u201d in pursuit of their shared mission of spurring economic development, Johnson says. For example, CoE has now joined in sponsoring CEIS\u2019s annual technology showcase of joint university\/company projects.<\/p>\n<p>These are the first CoE grants to be based on a new model that not only involves a call for proposals but also requires economic impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a new way of approaching research for many of our faculty, and we want to do all we can to help them \u00a0tap into this new form of support for their work,&#8221; Johnson says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four grants from the Center of Excellence (CoE) in
