{"id":350772,"date":"2018-11-27T13:06:42","date_gmt":"2018-11-27T18:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=350772"},"modified":"2024-04-13T11:31:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T15:31:24","slug":"two-rochester-scientists-named-aaas-fellows-350772","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/two-rochester-scientists-named-aaas-fellows-350772\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Rochester scientists named AAAS fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-350792 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kara-bren-squared.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Kara Bren\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/>Kara Bren<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Professor of Chemistry<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 85%\"><br \/>\nMuch of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/chm\/groups\/bren\/research.html\">Bren\u2019s\u00a0research has involved cytochrome c, a metalloprotein<\/a> that, depending on how it is \u201cfolded,\u201d can either play a role in respiration or in apoptosis \u2013 the natural death of cells that occurs as part of normal growth. Working with colleagues in her department, she is exploring how derivatives of cytochrome c can be used as catalysts to produce hydrogen from water as a carbon free source of energy.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h3><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-350802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/robert-boyd-squared.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Robert Boyd\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/>Robert Boyd<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Professor of Optics and Physics<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 85%\"><br \/>\nBoyd has played a key role in the development of the field of metamaterials, whose properties can be tailored to perform specific tasks. His lab has used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/new-approach-uses-twisted-light-to-increase-the-efficiency-of-quantum-cryptography-systems-94122\/\">\u201ctwisted light\u201d<\/a> to increase the bit-carrying capacity of a photon. Currently he is exploring the use of epsilon-near-zero materials to create nonlinear photonic devices that could have game-changing implications: for instance, a solid-state system that could serve as a platform for all-optical computation and signal processing using only a few tens of photons.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Two University of Rochester faculty members \u2013 Kara Bren and Robert Boyd \u2013 have been named fellows of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\">American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a> (AAAS). They are among 416 members of the association being recognized for their \u201cefforts toward advancing scientific applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bren, a professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/chm\/\">Department of Chemistry<\/a>, has helped advance the understanding of how changes in a protein\u2019s structure can alter its function, how proteins transfer electrons, and how these processes can be manipulated for various applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to know that that the work I\u2019ve done is recognized as being significant by this broader scientific society,\u201d Bren says. \u201cIt not only brings more visibility for me, but for the department and University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her other awards include an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and a Kavli Fellowship from the National Academy of Sciences. She is also a recipient of the University\u2019s Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Boyd, a professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/\">Institute of Optics<\/a>, is known for his pioneering work in nonlinear optical interactions and nonlinear optical properties of materials.<\/p>\n<p>Boyd says he is \u201cquite pleased\u201d at being named an AAAS fellow. \u201cIt means that one has achieved recognition even outside of one\u2019s narrow discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boyd is also a fellow of the Optical Society, SPIE, IEEE, and the American Physical Society. His awards include the OSA Charles Hard Townes Award and the Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Science from the American Physical Society. In 2010 he was awarded a highly competitive Canada Excellence Research chair at the University of Ottawa. He currently directs a major research center there, while still maintaining a research presence at Rochester.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kara Bren of the Department of
