{"id":359502,"date":"2019-01-25T11:27:27","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T16:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=359502"},"modified":"2019-04-04T16:52:30","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T20:52:30","slug":"local-teens-regeneron-science-talent-search-359502","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/local-teens-regeneron-science-talent-search-359502\/","title":{"rendered":"Local teens recognized for Laser Lab research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two local teens have been designated as Scholars in the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/student.societyforscience.org\/regeneron-sts\">Regeneron Science Talent Search<\/a> (formerly the Intel Science Talent Search) for research projects they carried out last summer at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester\u2019s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE).<\/a>\u00a0 Seniors Maia Raynor of Brighton High School and Anirudh Sharma of Webster Schroeder High School are among the 300 Scholars nationwide chosen from nearly 2,000 who entered the competition.<\/p>\n<p>They will each be awarded $2,000 and their schools will receive $2,000 to support their science, math and engineering programs.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Joe Morelle congratulated the students. \u201cIt is inspiring to see these talented high schoolers engage with groundbreaking research and be recognized nationally for the incredible scientific work they are able to achieve with the resources at Rochester Laser Lab,\u201d Schumer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd thank you to the University of Rochester for enabling the success of these students by allowing them to leverage groundbreaking technology and research that is taking place at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics,\u201d Morelle added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_360102\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360102\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-360102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Raynor-Maia-lle-regeneron-science-talent-search.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Raynor Maia in lab\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Raynor-Maia-lle-regeneron-science-talent-search.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Raynor-Maia-lle-regeneron-science-talent-search-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Raynor-Maia-lle-regeneron-science-talent-search-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-360102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raynor Maia, of Brighton High School. (University of Rochester photo \/ Eugene Kowaluk)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Raynor used a copper-zinc alloy to remove elemental hydrogen from air. This novel approach offers several advantages over traditional techniques of extracting tritium from air streams and provides the tritium community with a simplified method of reducing emissions to the environment. She was advised by Walter Shmayda, an LLE senior scientist, and Cody Fagan, a graduate student.<\/p>\n<p>Sharma carried out hydrodynamic simulations of a new \u201cdouble cone-in-shell\u201d target concept for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lasers.llnl.gov\/\">National Ignition Facility (NIF)<\/a> in support of experiments related to studying the internal structure of the sun. He showed that with optimally chosen parameters a short pulse of x-rays can be produced from a point source. The NIF is the world\u2019s largest laser, located at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llnl.gov\/\">Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)<\/a>.\u00a0LLE collaborates closely with LLNL. (University of Rochester photo \/ Eugene Kowaluk)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LLE has as its primary mission the study of the conditions necessary to create and sustain fusion.\u00a0Involving young adults in state-of-the-art science, however, is another important goal that LLE\u2019s scientists and engineers take very seriously.\u00a0LLE started its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/about\/education\/high_school_program.php\">Summer High School Research Program<\/a> in 1989 and has had 377 participants to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur program provides a unique educational opportunity for talented high-school students.\u00a0They\u2019re amazingly motivated, and it\u2019s exciting to see them recognized as among the best in the nation,\u201d said Craxton.\u00a0Students working at the laboratory have made up the large majority of Rochester-area Science Talent Search Scholars honored during the past three decades.\u00a0A total of 38 students from the LLE program have now become Scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Application materials for LLE\u2019s summer program are sent to area high schools and placed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/\">LLE website<\/a> in early February or can be obtained directly by calling Jean Steve at 275-5286.\u00a0 For more information about the program itself, please
