Australians are posing that question as controversy over Australia Day grows. The national holiday\u2014first widely popularized with a government campaign for the bicentennial\u2014commemorates the day in 1788 when Captain Arthur Philip arrived with 11 convict ships and raised the Union Jack over Sydney Cove, claiming the land for Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>But the indigenous population had already lived in Australia for 60,000 years. Many take issue with the January 26 celebration, and a \u201cChange the Date\u201d movement is gaining momentum.<\/p>\n<p>In taking a closer look at the issue, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation\u2019s radio current events show, <em>The Signal<\/em>, turned to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/phl\/people\/faculty\/curren_randall\/index.html\">Randall Curren, chair of the philosophy department<\/a> and an expert on the ethics of cultivating patriotism. His most recent books include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/parsing-the-pledge-of-allegiance-supreme-court-anniversary-324462\/\"><em>Patriotic Education in a Global Age<\/em><\/a> (University of Chicago Press, 2018) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/art-preserving-opportunity\/\"><em>Living Well Now and in the Future: Why Sustainability Matters<\/em> <\/a>(MIT Press, 2017).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re looking for a national holiday that you want to function as a civically unifying event, it\u2019s not a great idea to pick something that\u2019s celebrating a moment of the inauguration of colonization,\u201d Curren told his hosts, advising that a better option for celebration is a moment of voluntary unification that offers founding rituals, stories, and events in which all people involved were willing participants.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/programs\/the-signal\/australia-days-controversial-foreign-cousins\/10754602\">Listen to the entire story on <em>The Signal.<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What makes for a good celebration of national origins?
