WHAT:<\/b>\u00a0Aaron Hughes will give his first lecture as the Philip S. Bernstein Professor of Jewish Studies in the Department of Religion and Classics. His talk, titled “Jewish Studies Then, Jewish Studies Now,” will incorporate a history of Rabbi Bernstein’s work and how it connects with the current and future state of Jewish studies. A reception will follow in the Welles-Brown Room of Rush Rhees Library.<\/p>\n
The Bernstein professorship was created in 1974 by friends of Rabbi Bernstein to recognize his contributions to the local community as well as his eminence as a scholar and world leader. Bernstein served as the spiritual leader of Temple B’rith Kodesh in Rochester for nearly 50 years and played a key role in advising U.S. Army Commanders in Europe, helping to resettle European Jews after World War II.<\/p>\n
Aaron Hughes is a professor of religion and the third Philip S. Bernstein Professor of Jewish Studies. His research interests are wide-ranging, but he works primarily on Jewish and Islamic philosophy in the medieval and early modern periods. His most recent books are\u00a0Abrahamic Religions: On the Uses and Abuses of History<\/i>\u00a0(Oxford University Press, 2013) and\u00a0Muslim Identities: An Introduction<\/i>\u00a0(Columbia University Press, 2013).<\/p>\n
