{"id":387712,"date":"2019-06-24T15:12:44","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T19:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=387712"},"modified":"2019-07-18T14:04:16","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T18:04:16","slug":"should-we-teach-children-patriotism-387712","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/should-we-teach-children-patriotism-387712\/","title":{"rendered":"Should we teach children patriotism in school?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as people balance their ethical obligations to their families with their responsibilities as citizens, they also can honor special commitments to their own country while acting as responsible members of the larger world.<\/p>\n<p>So says University of Rochester philosopher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/phl\/people\/faculty\/curren_randall\/index.html\">Randall Curren<\/a> in a recent story in the <em>Irish Times\u00a0<\/em>about teaching patriotism to schoolchildren. The paper interviewed Curren about the concept of \u201cvirtuous patriotism\u201d that he expounds in his newest book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/P\/bo28179129.html\">Patriotic Education in a Global Age<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(University of Chicago Press, 2018), coauthored with Charles Dorn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owe people we are interacting with\u2014wherever they are in the world\u2014fair cooperation,\u201d Curren told <em>Irish Times\u00a0<\/em>reporter Joe Humphreys. \u201cThat is a fundamental civic duty and anything that could constitute virtuous patriotism would have to fit into that larger scheme &#8230;
