{"id":389572,"date":"2019-07-16T11:56:39","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T15:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=389572"},"modified":"2019-07-24T14:11:11","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T18:11:11","slug":"international-carillon-queen-fabiola-competition-389572","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/international-carillon-queen-fabiola-competition-389572\/","title":{"rendered":"Winning the \u2018Olympics\u2019 of the carillon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Sunday, Alex Johnson \u201919 won first place in the prestigious international <a href=\"https:\/\/beiaardschool.mechelen.be\/queen-fabiola-competition\">Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition<\/a>, an event held every five years at the Royal Carillon School in Mechlin, Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPure joy and elation,\u201d he says, describing his initial reaction.<\/p>\n<p>Doris Aman, Johnson\u2019s former mentor and coordinator of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mur\/carillon\/\">University\u2019s Carillon Society,<\/a> describes the Queen Fabiola competition as the equivalent of top global competitions in violin or piano, or the Olympics in athletics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a global music festival, having tremendous respect amongst carillon professionals,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>She adds that she is she\u2019s \u201cstill reeling\u201d from the result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first reaction was to scream, shake my head, and jump up and down. (Rudi Van Poele video)<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, who is studying at the Royal Carillon School this year on a Belgian-American Educational Foundation (BAEF) fellowship, was one of 16 candidates\u2014from Australia to Russia and the United States\u2014who registered for the competition.<\/p>\n<p>He had never touched a carillon, a musical instrument comprised of bells, before taking a tour of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester\u2019s<\/a> River Campus during high school.<\/p>\n<p>While at Rochester, the Coppell, Texas, native and physics major mentored and played in the Carillon Society, was a member of ensembles with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mur\/\">Department of Music <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/\">Eastman School of Music<\/a>, and won the University\u2019s 2019 Charles Zettek Carillon Composition Award.<\/p>\n<p>He also spent a semester studying physics and music at the University of Sydney, Australia, before returning to the United States this past spring for a fellowship with Geert D\u2019hollander, a world renowned carillonist, in Lake Wales, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson was also offered a Fulbright US student grant to study carillon performance in Belgium but chose the BAEF fellowship.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/alexander-johnson-carillon-physics-major-379102\/\" rel=\"bookmark\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-389652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/alex-johnson-193x117.jpg\" alt=\"close up of hands playing the wooden hammers of the carillon\" width=\"333\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/alex-johnson-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/alex-johnson-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/alex-johnson.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><a title=\"Permanent Link to Carillon strikes a chord for senior physics major\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/alexander-johnson-carillon-physics-major-379102\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">READ MORE: Carillon strikes a chord for senior physics major<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>With a major in physics and a minor in music, Alex Johnson \u201919 is heading to Belgium after graduation to learn more about \u201cthe bells\u201d that inspired him in Rochester. \u201cLots of deciding to do.
