A Spanish professor. A scientist turned writing instructor.<\/p>\n<p>These are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a>\u2019s recipients of the 2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ourfaculty\/goergen\/\">Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1997 by University Trustee and Board Chair Emeritus Robert Goergen \u201960 and his wife, Pamela, the award recognizes distinctive teaching accomplishments of faculty in Arts, Sciences &amp; Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s recipients are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Matthew BaileyShea<\/strong>, an associate professor in the College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mur\/\">Department of Music<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/\">Eastman School of Music<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ryan Prendergast<\/strong>, an associate professor of Spanish in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/mlc\/\">Department of Modern Languages and Cultures<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Katherine Schaefer<\/strong>, an associate professor of instruction in the <a href=\"https:\/\/writing.rochester.edu\/\">Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The three will be honored in a 5 p.m. ceremony on Tuesday, October 22 in the Hawkins-Carlson Room at Rush Rhees Library.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of a particularly strong crop of nominations, we selected three excellent educators: congratulations to professors BaileyShea, Prendergast, and Schaefer,\u201d says Jeffrey Runner, dean of the College. \u201cI am so grateful to Bob and Pam Goergen for enabling us to recognize this critical aspect of our faculty\u2019s role in the university. So many students have been positively impacted by their hard work and ingenious ways of making the material they\u2019re teaching come alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nominations for the Goergen Awards come from students, faculty, staff members, and administrators. progressive loosening of the reigns&#8230;\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\"><img decoding=\"async\"
