Now, \u201clasers are everywhere,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/physics-astronomy\/people-profiles\/donna-strickland\">Donna Strickland \u201989 (PhD)<\/a>. They are used to study gravity and black holes, to manufacture parts in cell phones, and to conduct medical procedures like Lasik eye surgery.<\/p>\n<p>In a video for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/\">WIRED<\/a><\/em>, Strickland, a professor of physics at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochester-represents-at-nobel-prize-ceremony-353002\/\">2018 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a>, explains the inner-workings and importance of lasers to five different people: a child, a teenager, a college student, a graduate student, and, finally, to an expert. That expert is Mike Campbell, director of the University of Rochester\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/\">Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3eTogq7rknQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In October 2018, Strickland became the third woman ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochesters-breakthrough-in-laser-science-earns-nobel-prize-340302\/\">work she conducted at the LLE<\/a> as a graduate student, which revolutionized the field of high-intensity laser physics. She shared the prize with G\u00e9rard Mourou, a former engineering professor and scientist at the LLE and Strickland\u2019s PhD advisor during the time they pioneered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/what-is-chirped-pulse-amplification-nobel-prize-341072\/\">\u201cchirped-pulse amplification.<\/a>\u201d Known as CPA, this work was the basis of Strickland\u2019s 1988 PhD dissertation. CPA has since been used to develop lasers as high-powered tools for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/what-is-chirped-pulse-amplification-nobel-prize-341072\/\">new medical, scientific, and commercial applications.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Starting by answering the question \u201cWhat is a laser?\u201d for a nine-year-old child, Strickland moves through progressively more complicated concepts in optics, photonics, and high-intensity laser physics in the video. She ends on a discussion with Campbell, whom she met in 1991 when the two worked together at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter you [Strickland] demonstrated CPA, I was intrigued by how powerful we could make lasers, and how lasers are wonderful because they allow you to take energy and compress it in space and time,\u201d Campbell says in the segment.<\/p>\n<p>The two discuss the peak power of lasers, the excitement of conducting photonics research, and future plans for a powerful new laser set up at the LLE.<\/p>\n<hr
