{"id":409112,"date":"2019-11-26T09:38:12","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T14:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=409112"},"modified":"2020-11-23T13:50:33","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T18:50:33","slug":"two-rochester-scientists-named-aaas-fellows-409112","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/two-rochester-scientists-named-aaas-fellows-409112\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Rochester scientists named AAAS fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two <strong><a href=\"\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a><\/strong> faculty members have been named fellows of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\">American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a><\/strong> (AAAS). <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/chem.chem.rochester.edu\/~tdkgrp\/members\/members.php\">Todd Krauss<\/a><\/strong>, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/labs\/benjamin-miller.aspx\">Benjamin Miller<\/a><\/strong>, Dean\u2019s Professor of Dermatology, are among 443 members of the association being recognized this year for their \u201cefforts toward advancing scientific applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_409262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-409262\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-409262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/todd-krauss.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Todd Kraus in his lab.\" width=\"325\" height=\"487\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-409262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Todd Krauss, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry. (University of Rochester photo \/ J. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Todd Krauss studies the fundamental physical properties of nanomaterials. Such materials are larger in size than individual molecules but smaller than macroscopic crystals. Krauss researches how nanomaterials interact with light and how nanomaterials can convert energy from light into the formation of chemical bonds. Solar energy, for example, can be converted to clean-burning chemical fuels, such as hydrogen, using colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals as the light-harvesting element. The research has important implications for the future development of alternative and renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am truly honored to be selected as an AAAS fellow, as it represents joining an exceptional group of scholars both here at Rochester and also worldwide,\u201d Krauss says. \u201cI want to recognize that while this distinction is for me personally, it really was enabled though the efforts of dozens of extremely talented undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars who have worked in our research group at the University of Rochester over the past 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Krauss joined the Rochester chemistry faculty in 2000 and received a joint appointment with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/\">Institute of Optics<\/a> in 2008. He is also a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America. He received the University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ourfaculty\/goergen\/\">Goergen Award for Distinguished Achievement and Artistry in Undergraduate Teaching<\/a> in 2009; was honored with the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award in 2005; and was named an Alfred P. Sloan Award winner in 2004.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_409272\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-409272\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-409272\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/benjamin-miller.jpg\" alt=\"portrait of Benjamin Miller.\" width=\"325\" height=\"488\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-409272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Benjamin Miller, Dean\u2019s Professor of Dermatology. (University of Rochester Medical Center photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Benjamin Miller is focused on two areas of research: how various molecules recognize RNA sequences; and how the optical properties of nanomaterials might aid in the development of new biosensors for biological investigations and clinical screenings.<\/p>\n<p>In the realm of RNA recognition, Miller and the members of his lab have applied techniques of molecular design and a novel method of small-molecule evolution called Dynamic Combinatorial Chemistry, which allows researchers to rapidly \u201cprototype\u201d RNA binding molecules. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/labs\/benjamin-miller.aspx\">Miller lab<\/a> uses these methods to develop new RNA-targeted drugs to treat diseases such as Myotonic Dystrophy and HIV. In investigating the optical properties of nanomaterials, Miller hopes to pave the way toward compact, inexpensive biosensors that could replace current floor-standing clinical diagnostic systems with a cell phone-sized device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to join the ranks of AAAS fellows and view it as recognition of the quality of work my research group members have done over the years,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>Miller joined the Rochester faculty in 1996 and has joint appointments in biomedical engineering, biochemistry and biophysics, and optics, as well as in the chemistry and materials science graduate programs. He received the Future of Health Technology Award in 2010 and the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar award in 2001.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Todd Krauss, professor and chair
