{"id":422662,"date":"2020-04-04T13:36:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-04T17:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=422662"},"modified":"2020-04-07T15:52:08","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T19:52:08","slug":"rochester-scientists-earn-national-recognition-for-excellence-in-engineering-422662","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochester-scientists-earn-national-recognition-for-excellence-in-engineering-422662\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Rochester scientists earn national recognition for excellence in engineering"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_422702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-422702\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-422702\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Marvin-DoyleyNC.jpg\" alt=\"photo of Marvin Doyley\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-422702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marvin Doyley, professor of electrical and computer engineering (University photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two faculty members at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a>\u2014Benjamin Miller and Marvin Doyley\u2014have been inducted as fellows of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aimbe.org\">American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The institute\u2019s College of Fellows is composed of the top 2 percent of medical and biological engineers, who are employed in academia, industry, clinical practice, and government.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of health concerns, AIMBE\u2019s annual meeting and induction ceremony scheduled for March 29-30 was canceled, but Miller and Doyley were remotely inducted as part of a total of 156 fellows who make up the Class of 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/ece\/people\/faculty\/doyley_marvin\/index.html\">Marvin Doyley<\/a>, professor of electrical and computer engineering with joint appointments in biomedical engineering, and imaging sciences, was selected for \u201coutstanding contributions in developing algorithms for elastography and the application of elastography to vascular mechanics and disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doyley joined the University of Rochester in 2008. His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/ece\/sites\/doyley\/index.html\">Parametric Imaging Research Laboratory<\/a> develops novel imaging methods for detecting disease more quickly and for determining how well patients are responding to therapy. Doyley\u2019s primary research interests include cardiovascular imaging, breast cancer imaging, ultrasound beamforming, contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging, ultrasound elastography, magnetic resonance elastography, and pancreatic cancer imaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to be named an AIMBE fellow, which is due to the hard work of my research groups, past and present,\u201d Doyley says.<\/p>\n<p>Doyley was also one of 20 faculty members nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/marvin-doyley-selected-for-first-cohort-of-national-stem-leadership-program-394002\/\">recently selected <\/a>for the first cohort of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspirealliance.org\/institutional-change\/iaspire-leadership-academy\">IAspire Leadership Academy<\/a>, a program aimed at helping STEM faculty from underrepresented backgrounds ascend to leadership roles at colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_422692\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-422692\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-422692\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Ben-MillerNC.jpg\" alt=\"photo of Benjamin Miller\" width=\"300\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-422692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Benjamin Miller, professor of dermatology (University photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/21977435-benjamin-l-miller\">Benjamin Miller<\/a>, the Dean&#8217;s Professor of Dermatology with joint appointments in biomedical engineering, biochemistry and biophysics, and optics, was selected for \u201cthe development and application of versatile optical biosensor platforms, including Arrayed Imaging Reflectometry and integrated photonic sensors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller, who was also recently named a fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\">American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)<\/a>, joined the Rochester faculty in 1996. He is focused on two areas of research: how molecules recognize RNA sequences; and how the optical properties of nanomaterials might aid in the development of new biosensors for biological investigations and clinical screenings. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/labs\/benjamin-miller.aspx\">Miller lab<\/a> hopes to pave the way toward compact, inexpensive biosensors that could replace current floor-standing clinical diagnostic systems with a cell phone\u2013sized device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing named an AIMBE Fellow recognizes the hard work my students and other group members have done over the years,\u201d Miller says, \u201cand I hope it will spur us to continue to make new diagnostic tools for improving human health.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty members Benjamin
