{"id":440132,"date":"2020-06-11T15:26:50","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T19:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=440132"},"modified":"2020-06-19T21:15:31","modified_gmt":"2020-06-20T01:15:31","slug":"how-dr-chatbot-evolved-into-a-regionwide-covid-tracking-tool-440132","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/how-dr-chatbot-evolved-into-a-regionwide-covid-tracking-tool-440132\/","title":{"rendered":"How Dr. Chat Bot evolved into a regionwide COVID-19 tracking tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- Begin copy for copy and paste. --><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 85%; font-size: 125%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Members of an innovative technology and mobile applications lab at the Medical Center worked overtime to develop a state-of-the-art tool to help monitor the spread of coronavirus at the University and beyond.<\/div>\n<p><!--stop copying for the subhead. --><\/p>\n<p>When the pandemic finally reached Rochester in March, anxious citizens deluged a COVID-19 hotline at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a>\u2019s Medical Center, tying up emergency room and Urgent Care physicians and staff. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/medicine\/\">Medical Center<\/a> leaders needed a way to screen out the calls from the \u201cworried well,\u201d so people with actual symptoms could get through. Pronto.<\/p>\n<p>They turned to the UR Health Lab.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_440192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-440192\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-440192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/2020_june_chatbot_screenshot.jpg\" alt=\"image of dr. chatbot interface\" width=\"600\" height=\"526\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-440192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The online symptom tracker Dr. Chat Bot prompts users to report their symptoms as a way to track COVID-19.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In two days, the team produced a chatbot\u2014a software application to conduct an online chat conversation via text or text-to-speech, in lieu of direct contact with a live human. Within a week the app\u2014dubbed Dr. Chat Bot\u2014reduced the hotline\u2019s volume of calls by 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p>When New York ordered statewide lock downs a week later, the Medical Center\u2019s Employee Health office struggled to conduct daily screening for the 9,000 essential employees who still needed to report for work.<\/p>\n<p>The UR Health Team again delivered, revamping Dr. Chat Bot not only to automate the office\u2019s paper and pencil screening, but also to link the information to other, previously separate databases so the University could better track the health of its employees.<\/p>\n<p>And now, a third iteration of the COVID-19-tracking chatbot technology is gaining national attention. It will be used to track the pandemic across 13 counties in the Rochester region, giving policymakers better guidance on when and where to reopen by pinpointing how the disease is progressing in individual zip code areas. (Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/novel-project-uses-university-of-rochester-technology-to-track-covid-19-440012\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Monroe County executive Adam Bello says the regionwide ROC Covid-19 tracking project is a \u201cgame changer.\u201d And Monroe County Health Director Michael Mendoza praised Health Lab codirector Michael Hasselberg and other lab members for their vision in creating a tool \u201cthat stands to make an immeasurable contribution to public health in our region.\u201d<br \/>\n<!-- begin copying for copy and paste--><\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\" style=\"width: 25%;\">\n<h2>Sign up for ROC Covid-19<\/h2>\n<p>To learn more about ROC Covid-19 and how to participate, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/roccovid.org\/\">Roccovid.org.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Coronavirus update<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/\">The University\u2019s website<\/a> is a way to find guidance and critical information during a rapidly changing situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- stop copying. --><\/p>\n<h2>What is the UR Health Lab?<\/h2>\n<p>Part think tank, part digital health technology incubator, the lab is an \u201cinnovation shop that is very different from anything else at the University,\u201d says Hasselberg, an associate professor of psychiatry and clinical nursing.<\/p>\n<p>Small, but nimble, the lab uses the project management approach of \u201cscrum\u201d to quickly meet technology challenges identified by Medical Center leaders. The framework sets fixed time periods, called sprints, for team members to complete a set amount of work; members meet in daily \u201cscrums\u201d to track progress.<\/p>\n<p>The lab, directed by David Mitten, professor of orthopaedics, is especially strong in machine learning and mobile application development.<\/p>\n<p>Developing the chatbot and its mobile applications was a relatively straightforward task for the lab members involved in that part of the project. They included Mitten; Hasselberg; Daniel Hudy and Michael Curtis, senior software engineers; Kathleen Fear, senior data analyst; Jack Teitel, lead data scientist, and Cristiano Tapparello, research assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering and Health Lab director of software engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cbiggest lift\u201d for the team, Hasselberg says, was integrating the various databases for the \u201cback end\u201d of version two of Dr. Chatbot, used to screen Medical Center employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are an employee of the University and you log into the chatbot, we have to authenticate you and make sure that you are who you say you are,\u201d Hasselberg says. \u201cAnd if, god forbid, you have symptoms, we need your information to go back to the right people at Employee Health Services, so they have enough data to help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of that involved connecting different datasets, which has been problematic in the past because of the decentralized structure of the University. \u201cData at the University are very dispersed,\u201d Hasselberg says, \u201cso actually this has moved our University forward in addressing that problem.
