{"id":444362,"date":"2020-07-15T14:56:39","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T18:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=444362"},"modified":"2022-12-06T14:32:10","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T19:32:10","slug":"engineers-volunteer-to-help-provide-ppe-444362","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/engineers-volunteer-to-help-provide-ppe-444362\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineers help volunteer group provide protective gear for caregivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- Begin copy for copy and paste. --><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 85%; font-size: 125%; font-face: arial; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">University team uses 3-D printers and laser cutters to make face shields as part of a community-wide effort to supply much-needed equipment.<\/div>\n<p><!--stop copying for the subhead. --><\/p>\n<p>After COVID-19 closed their campus, mechanical engineers at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a>\u2014true to their calling\u2014wanted to use their problem-solving skills to help combat the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, they heard about Coty Pastene and her volunteer organization <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/face-shields-roc\/home\">Face Shields Roc<\/a>, which was producing much-needed protective face shields\u2014an important aspect of personal protective equipment (PPE) that nurses, doctors, and other health care providers need to stay safe during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Pastene welcomed the engineers to Face Shields Roc, a community of volunteers that also includes 3-D hobbyists and engineers at Rochester Institute of Technology. For two and half months, the University\u2019s engineers created properly sized plastic sheets for the shields with a laser cutter and produced plastic frames on five 3-D printers.<br \/>\n<!-- begin copying for copy and paste--><\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\" style=\"width: 25%;\">\n<h2>Rochester Restart<\/h2>\n<p>Stay up to date on the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/restart-and-recovery\/\">plans to safely phase in campus operations.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Coronavirus concern<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re concerned about sympotoms of potential exposure to coronavirus, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/faq\/how-to-report-exposure-faqs\/\">the University\u2019s COVID-19 website<\/a>for guidance and information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- stop copying. --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoty has been the superstar,\u201d says Omar Soufan \u201917, \u201918 (MS), a research technician in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/me\/\">Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/a> who led the University team. \u201cShe provided a majority of the funding, resources, and connections to other institutions. Honestly, our work took a new turn when we joined her group. It has never been more true in my life, that there is strength in numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the numbers have been remarkable.<\/p>\n<h2>Providing protective equipment locally and across the country<\/h2>\n<p>Pastene\u2019s organization, consisting of about 80 volunteers, has produced 24,464 face shields, initially for Rochester-area hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics, then for hospitals and long-term care facilities in Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, and Georgia, and most recently, for relief agencies in the Middle East, Haiti, Honduras, and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Soufan\u2019s team produced about 2,500 3-D\u2013printed headbands and more than 3,000 laser cut sheets that were assembled into face shields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s about 10 percent of our total production,\u201d Pastene says. The contribution from Soufan and his team has been \u201cimmense,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h2>Making face shields with 3-D printers and transparency sheets<\/h2>\n<p>Pastene, a data engineer with Shaw Industries, launched her project March 28 after her wife, Katie, an ICU nurse practitioner at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/strong-memorial.aspx\">Strong Memorial Hospital<\/a>, told her about the critical need to provide PPE for caregivers working with COVID-19 patients. Pastene \u201cwent out on a limb\u201d with a post on the Town of Webster Facebook page, asking \u201cDoes anyone have a 3-D printer or transparency sheets and want to print face shields for our medical community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The response was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of this city, that the people of Rochester, including Omar and his team, are so philanthropic, and so willing to find out \u2018Who are you? What do you want to do? Cool, we\u2019ll jump into that.\u2019\u2009\u201d Pastene\u2019s employer generously helped cover shipping costs; Monroe County also provided support.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the volunteers, including Pastene and Soufan, were doing the volunteer work in addition to their regular jobs.<\/p>\n<p>As Monroe County has been able to limit the COVID-19 pandemic this summer, Face Shields Roc is on standby for now. But the organization is ready to resume production at a minute\u2019s notice if a surge in cases occurs locally, Pastene says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s any organization locally that needs face shields, we\u2019re more than happy to continue helping,\u201d she says. \u201cBut we also understand that there\u2019s a lot of small companies that are selling face shields at a nominal price, and I would feel terrible stealing their business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To learn more, contact Pastene at <a href=\"mailto:cotypastene@gmail.com\">cotypastene@gmail.com<\/a> or visit the organization\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/face-shields-roc\/home\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Meet the Rochester PPE team<\/h2>\n<p>The University&#8217;s contribution was also a team effort.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Soufan, research engineer Jonathan Becker; graduate students Katherine Kraweic and Jia Liu; Matthew Yates, a professor of chemical engineering; postdoctoral associate Jonathan Cheng, and Soufan\u2019s brother, Fares, were instrumental in achieving the production goals through 3-D printing, laser cutting, and assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Mechanical Engineering\u2019s senior technical associate, Scott Russell, Soufan\u2019s colleague and mentor, started the initiative with Soufan, connected him with Pastene, and worked on production and assembly efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Department technical associates Mike Pomerantz and Chris Pratt helped troubleshoot technical and production aspects of the project. Jill Morris, department administrator, and Alexandra Ferrarese, staff accountant, handled purchases and expenses. And Renato Perucchio, a professor and chair of mechanical engineering, lobbied to provide access for employees during lockdowns and provided financial support and encouragement. The initiative would not have launched if it was not for the financial support from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/\">Institute of Optics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the face shield project winding down for now, Soufan will turn his attention to another COVID-related project\u2014a low-cost reusable respirator for those in need.<\/p>\n<p>Soufan, who is from Syria, came to the University initially as a biomedical engineering undergraduate. As a student he teamed up with a fellow student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/our-goal-was-simple-we-wanted-to-help-as-many-refugees-as-we-could-215892\/\">to design prosthetics for refugees in the Middle East<\/a>, and also competed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wire-team-meliora-hult-prize-261412\/\">national innovation Hult Prize competition<\/a> with a plan to build refugee housing out of recycled plastic bricks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is so much pain and suffering around the world,\u201d Soufan says. \u201cI consider myself very lucky, to have been given the opportunity to continue my education with the help of UR. When so many people live day by day. I feel that when the time comes and those people need help, I owe it to them to help make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin copying for copy and paste--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Read
