TIME, DATE, PLACE:<\/b>\u00a06 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday April 3, Dewey Hall 2161, University of Rochester River Campus<\/p>\n

WHAT:<\/b>\u00a0Four University of Rochester experts will discuss the Russian annexation of the Crimean peninsula and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The panel will touch on a variety of issues including Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objectives and speculation about his next moves. The panel also will explore political constraints, such as Europe’s dependency on Russian oil and reliance on exports to Russia.<\/p>\n

PANELISTS: Randall Stone<\/b>, director of the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies and professor of political science, is an expert on the IMF, the World Bank, and eastern and central Europe. His publications include\u00a0Controlling Institutions<\/i>\u00a0(Cambridge University Press, 2011),\u00a0Lending Credibility<\/i>\u00a0(Princeton University Press, 2002), and\u00a0Satellites and Commissars<\/i>\u00a0(Princeton University Press, 1996).<\/p>\n

Henk Goemans<\/b>, associate professor of political science, is an expert on international conflict. He studies why leaders initiate international conflict and why people become attached to a “homeland” and the consequences of such attachments for international conflict. His publications include\u00a0Fighting for Survival; Leaders and International Conflict<\/i>\u00a0with Giacomo Chiozza (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and\u00a0War and Punishment<\/i>\u00a0(Princeton University Press, 2000).<\/p>\n

Matthew Lenoe<\/b>, associate professor of history, is an expert on Stalinist culture and politics and the history of mass media in Russia. His publications include\u00a0Closer to the Masses: Stalinist Culture, Social Revolution, and Soviet Newspapers<\/i>\u00a0(Harvard University Press, 2004) and\u00a0The Kirov Murder and Soviet History<\/i>\u00a0(Yale University Press, 2010).<\/p>\n

Nikita Maslennikov<\/b>, a senior lecturer of Russian, is an economist who has worked on urban and investment planning for the Russian government and international firms.<\/p>\n
