{"id":460312,"date":"2020-10-29T16:55:57","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T20:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=460312"},"modified":"2020-10-29T16:56:53","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T20:56:53","slug":"teaching-national-mythologies-doesnt-help-society-address-problems-460312","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/teaching-national-mythologies-doesnt-help-society-address-problems-460312\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching national mythologies doesn\u2019t help society address problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When President Trump spoke at the National Archives to mark Constitution Day in September, he said that schoolchildren are taught a \u201ctwisted web of lies\u201d about the country\u2019s history because of \u201cleft-wing indoctrination.\u201d He declared that \u201cOur youth will be taught to love America with all of their heart and all of their soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cwe see little merit in the notion that love of country is something that can be taught through celebratory history,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/phl\/people\/faculty\/curren_randall\/index.html\">Randall Curren<\/a> and Charles Dorn write in an op-ed at RealClearEducation, a global education news and commentary website.<\/p>\n<p>Curren, a professor of philosophy and of education, and chair of Rochester\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/phl\/index.html\">philosophy department<\/a>, is an ethicist who works across the boundaries of moral, political, legal, environmental, and educational philosophy. His books include <em>Living Well Now and in the Future: Why Sustainability Matters<\/em> (MIT Press, 2017) and <em>Aristotle on the Necessity of Public Education<\/em> (Lanham, MD: Rowman &amp; Littlefield, 2000). He and Dorn, a professor and chair of education at Bowdoin College, are coauthors of <em>Patriotic Education in a Global Age<\/em> (University of Chicago Press, 2018).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the <a
