Brianna Theobald<\/strong><\/a>, an assistant professor of history at the\u00a0University of Rochester<\/strong><\/a>, has won a third award for her first book,\u00a0Reproduction on the Reservation: Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Colonialism in the Long Twentieth Century<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(University of North Carolina Press, 2019). In November, the American Society for Ethnohistory<\/a> awarded Theobald the Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin Award,<\/a> which\u2014established in 1981\u2014is given annually for the best book-length contribution to the field of ethnohistory.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m honored that\u00a0Reproduction on the Reservation<\/em>\u00a0is in the company of the truly excellent works of scholarship that have received the Wheeler-Voegelin Award in recent years,\u201d says Theobald. At the virtual award ceremony the president of the American Society for Ethnohistory, Pete Sigal<\/a>, a professor of history and gender, sexuality, and feminist studies at Duke University<\/a>, highlighted Theobald\u2019s extensive field work on the Crow Reservation. \u201cThat\u2019s especially meaningful to me because I view Crow women\u2019s stories as the heart of the book,\u201d says Theobald.<\/p>\n

The Rochester historian earlier won two other prizes for her monograph\u2014the\u00a0John C. Ewers Award<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from the Western History Association and the\u00a0Armitage-Jameson Prize<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from the Coalition for Western Women\u2019s History.<\/p>\n

Reproduction on the Reservation<\/em>\u00a0traces the history of reproductive health care and reproductive politics on reservations during the last century, including what\u2019s now considered a notorious period in the 1970s, when US doctors sterilized an estimated 25 to 42 percent of Native American women of childbearing age, some as young as 15, often without the women\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistorical research and writing at its finest,\u201d is how Laura Smoller<\/a>, professor and chair of the Rochester\u00a0Department of History<\/strong><\/a>, characterizes Theobald\u2019s book. \u201cHer pathbreaking work on reproduction and childbearing by Native American women challenges existing categories and eschews reductionist interpretations, all in accessible, beautifully crafted prose.\u201d<\/p>\n
