{"id":479032,"date":"2021-05-06T06:59:19","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T10:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=479032"},"modified":"2021-05-16T10:39:37","modified_gmt":"2021-05-16T14:39:37","slug":"beirut-native-gains-engineering-entrepreneurial-skills-rochester-479032","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/beirut-native-gains-engineering-entrepreneurial-skills-rochester-479032\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I am ready to be many things\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Beirut native Marc Haddad \u201921 has \u201csome of the best experiences of my life\u201d at Rochester.<\/h2>\n<p>Marc Haddad \u201921 wanted to gain engineering and entrepreneurial skills to help address the breakdown of basic services that affect his family in Beirut, Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>But the endemic corruption that contributes to those problems dictated that Haddad seek higher education abroad.<\/p>\n<p><!-- begin copying for copy and paste--><\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/class-of-2021\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-477212\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/2021_commencement-rochester-toolkit-selfie-sign-300.jpg\" alt=\"2021 Commencement: Rochester toolkit selfie sign\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Celebrate the Class of 2021!<\/h2>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/class-of-2021\/\">Class of 2021 site<\/a> for details about this year\u2019s Commencement ceremonies and for a downloadable toolkit of materials to share your support on social media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- stop copying. --><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the first-generation student chose the <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a>, where he will graduate during this spring\u2019s commencement ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Haddad and his older brother, encouraged by their parents, participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amideast.org\/lebanon\">AMIDEAST<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/educationusa.state.gov\/centers\/educationusa-amideast-beirut\">Education USA<\/a>. The two were among a handful of Lebanese students chosen to attend college in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to visit colleges in person, Haddad went online instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a list of requirements\u2014having a good mechanical engineering program, a good business program, a good music program, a small but not too small campus, and a lot of diversity with international students. Rochester was the only university that kept showing up,\u201d Haddad says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the scholarships and financial aid that they gave me, it was the obvious choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haddad could not be happier with the results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had some of the best experiences of my life at the University,\u201d he says. \u201cI have accomplished way more than I thought I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that is saying a lot. During his four years on campus, Haddad has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>excelled academically in mechanical engineering<\/li>\n<li>worked in <a href=\"https:\/\/hajim.rochester.edu\/me\/sites\/sefkow\/index.html\">Adam Sefkow\u2019s research center<\/a> at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics<\/li>\n<li>cofounded <a href=\"https:\/\/00fourtytwo.wixsite.com\/home\">Fourty-Two<\/a>, a tutoring platform to reshape education in the Mediterranean<\/li>\n<li>participated in the regional finals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/three-rochester-student-teams-competing-for-1m-hult-prize-364472\/\">Hult Competition<\/a><\/li>\n<li>served as the Students\u2019 Association vice president<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And he still found time to participate in a host of student organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Haddad and running mate Justyna Gorka \u201921 ran their campaign to lead student government at the start of the pandemic while quarantining. \u201cIt was a very crazy experience,\u201d Haddad says. &#8220;We accomplished our own initiatives while still putting out so many fires. No one was ready for COVID.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, \u201cit was definitely worthwhile because we ended up doing a lot of good for the University,\u201d he says. For example, Haddad helped advance a request for permanency for the Douglass Leadership House, which promotes African American leadership skills. He also helped convene students and administrators to address concerns surrounding a display of national flags in Wilson Commons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single thing that I have done here, every single interaction that I\u2019ve had, whether with administrators or students has made me ready to be many things. I\u2019m not just ready to be a mechanical engineer. I\u2019m also ready to be an entrepreneur. I\u2019m ready to be a politician. So, I am beyond excited to see what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that is still up in the air.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad you asked me as a freshman, I would have said I\u2019m going to finish my degree and go back home to Lebanon to fix things there,\u201d Haddad says. \u201cAnd my long-term goal is always going to be in that direction. But (Lebanon) needs a lot of work, and I don\u2019t think I\u2019m ready yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he will be staying at Rochester one more year to complete a master\u2019s degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/team\/\">technical entrepreneurship and management (TEAM)<\/a> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/aincenter\/\">Ain Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of me wants to go directly to work,\u201d Haddad says. &#8220;But part of me wants to stay in Rochester.
