{"id":479292,"date":"2021-05-07T15:00:45","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T19:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=479292"},"modified":"2023-05-02T14:43:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T18:43:28","slug":"microscopes-and-soap-bubbles-display-art-of-science-479292","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/microscopes-and-soap-bubbles-display-art-of-science-479292\/","title":{"rendered":"Microscopes and soap bubbles show the &#8216;art of science&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Annual competition&#8217;s goal is to explore and illuminate the aesthetic beauty that results when science, art, and technology intersect.<\/h2>\n<p>What do electron microscopes, decellularization, and immunofluorescence have in common with an artist\u2019s palette of oil paints?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> students and researchers deftly used cutting-edge lab technologies like these to create many of the images entered in this year\u2019s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/news\/art-of-science.html\">Art of Science Competition<\/a>. The goal of the competition, which is sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a> in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.rochester.edu\/\">River Campus Libraries<\/a>, is to \u201cexplore and illuminate the aesthetic beauty that results when science, art, and technology intersect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition, which was open to currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff at the University, received 48 submissions representing 16 different disciplines, according to Brian McIntyre, director of operations at URNano and one of the organizers of the competition. Nearly 400 members of the University community cast their votes for the People\u2019s Choice award.<\/p>\n<p>The prizes are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 each for third place and People\u2019s Choice. The winning entries will be displayed in Carlson Library.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Art of Science competition highlights the importance of communicating science in accessible and engaging ways,\u201d says Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School. \u201cThe submissions this year were truly breath-taking, and the creativity of our students, faculty and staff is always inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heinzelman announced the winners at an in-person, outdoors event as a part of a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) student chapter.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First place<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-479332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-crystals.jpg\" alt=\"colorful crystals that look like flower blooms\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-crystals.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-crystals-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-crystals-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCrystals in Bloom\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Klaczko<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Chemistry, PhD candidate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Klaczko used a scanning electron microscope to capture an image of hydroxyapatite crystals. He then added colors in Photoshop to produce the final image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bursts of color and familiar flower forms will intrigue and inspire thought about crystal growth and ordered structure at the micro-scale,\u201d Klaczko says. \u201cThe relationship of a material which comprises our bone to the natural and macroscopic world will convey not only the power of electron microscopy but also the similarities that the inorganic and organic world share which may not be obvious.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Second place and People\u2019s Choice<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-479322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-iridescence.jpg\" alt=\"light shined on a soap bubble\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-iridescence.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-iridescence-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/art-of-science-iridescence-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIridescence in Motion\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Benjamin Margulies \u201924<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Optics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Margulies used commonplace items and simple processes\u2014shining light onto a soap bubble and capturing the image through a camera lens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis image shows the absolute magic that is light,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat we observe as all these different colors is the white light being broken up into its component wavelengths by interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Third place<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-479312 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/THIRD-2021-TheButterflyEffect.jpeg\" alt=\"image of the cellulose structure of a leaf\" width=\"1000\" height=\"706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/THIRD-2021-TheButterflyEffect.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/THIRD-2021-TheButterflyEffect-630x445.jpeg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/THIRD-2021-TheButterflyEffect-768x542.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Butterfly Effect\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna Lussier \u201923<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Studio arts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Broas \u201923<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Biochemistry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lussier borrowed a tissue-engineering technique from her collaborator, Sarah Broas \u201923, to show how the injection of sodium dodecyl sulfate explodes the contents of a cell, leaving behind, in this case, the cellulose structure of a leaf. Multiple leaves were arranged to create the final image.<\/p>\n<p>Lussier says the image speaks to the problem of public distrust of science. \u201cOur piece proposes that transparency is key to regain the public\u2019s trust. Small steps towards this goal will achieve a more expansive societal shift\u2014the butterfly effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"large-up-2\">\n<div
