{"id":481112,"date":"2021-05-17T20:12:09","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T00:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=481112"},"modified":"2021-05-19T14:51:55","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T18:51:55","slug":"undergraduates-win-daad-rise-german-summer-scholarships-481112","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/undergraduates-win-daad-rise-german-summer-scholarships-481112\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight Rochester undergraduates win scholarships for summer research in Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">The DAAD-RISE program enables outstanding students in the sciences to conduct research at top German universities.<\/h2>\n<p>Eight\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a> undergraduates were accepted into the Germany-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daad.de\/rise\/en\/\">DAAD-RISE<\/a> (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) program. Participating students are matched with a top German university or research institution as well as a mentor in order to carry out research while also receiving a stipend and housing assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the Rochester students ultimately declined the internship opportunity this year.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-481962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/inline_daad-rise-logo.jpg\" alt=\"DAAD RISE Germany logo.\" width=\"333\" height=\"50\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The program, established in 2005, is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and aims to promote student exchange to Germany in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, and life sciences, and to motivate undergraduate students to learn more about Germany\u2019s research landscape and study opportunities. Internships were first offered to applicants from the United States and Canada, with the program extended to the United Kingdom in 2009 and Ireland in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>DAAD-RISE is hopeful the research programs can be conducted in person this summer, but as of the end of the spring semester for undergraduates in Arts, Sciences &amp; Engineering, non-essential travel remains restricted into Germany due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some students unable to travel to Germany may be able to carry out their projects remotely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRochester students have shown a consistently highly level of interest in this international research opportunity, and we are proud that year over year our undergraduate scientists and engineers compete quite well against their peers from other institutions,\u201d says Belinda Redden, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/studentfellowships\/index.html\">Student Fellowships Office<\/a>. \u201cFor many, this program represents not only a significant professional development opportunity but also a chance for an extended experience abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship winners who plan to begin internships this summer are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jenna Diamico \u201922<\/strong> (geomechanics)<br \/>\nJ\u00fclich Institute of Energy and Climate Research<br \/>\nProject: \u201cStatistical Analysis of Gravity Wave Propogation\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thien Hung Nguyen \u201922<\/strong> (T5) (chemical engineering)<br \/>\nJ\u00fclich Research Center<br \/>\nProject: \u201cMaterials Synthesis and Processing Advanced Li Metal Anodes for All-Solid-State Batteries\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maria Plessia \u201922<\/strong> (mechanical engineering)<br \/>\nInstitute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology at Dresden Institute of Technology<br \/>\nProject: \u201cFatigue Characterisation by Means of AI Methods of Advanced Composites for Aircraft Application\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hristijan Stojkovic \u201922<\/strong> (optical engineering)<br \/>\nHumboldt University of Berlin Institute of Physics<br \/>\nProject: \u201cBuilding an Ultra-Cold Atom Machine as a Ground Test Bed for Space Missions\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Navya Uberoi \u201922<\/strong> (physics and astronomy)<br \/>\nTechnical University of Dortmund<br \/>\n\u201cAnalysis of IceCube Neutrino Follow-Up Data with the MAGIC Collaboration\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s note: The headline originally stated that seven students won scholarships.
