They\u2019re all part of the many innovations featured in this year\u2019s Hajim School Design Day at the University of Rochester.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors at the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have spent much of the school year partnering with local companies and institutions to solve real-world engineering problems in the fields of medical devices, alternative energy, optics, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Their innovations will be on display Friday, May 2 from 10:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. in the Goergen Center Athletic Field House.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Patient Tracker<\/strong>: locates hospital patients who have Alzheimer\u2019s or dementia<\/li>\n<li><strong>Early Malaria Detection<\/strong>: a portable, continuous monitoring device for the early detection of malaria in small children<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organic Farm Soil Heating System:<\/strong> extends the growing season in the Greenhouses at the Wegmans Organic Farms<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hemo<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Box: <\/strong>a device for effectively storing and transporting red blood cell units<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o6vasm-tRRk\" width=\"853\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><em>More on Project Hemo-Box.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Event Details for Media<\/h3>\n<p>WHAT: Hajim School Design Day 2014<\/p>\n<p>VISUALS: More than a hundred engineering students demonstrating their innovations<\/p>\n<p>WHERE: Goergen Athletic Center Field House at the University of Rochester (<strong>Note the new location<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>WHEN: Friday, May 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>PARKING<strong>:<\/strong> Media should stop at the information booth near the Elmwood Avenue entrance to receive a parking pass and directions on where to park.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE TO MEDIA: A short <a href=\"http:\/\/uofrphoto.smugmug.com\/gallery\/22650745_rJFWZx#!i=1814535259&amp;k=d4xcWDZ\">video<\/a> provides a glimpse of the projects that typically make up Design Day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Medical devices, a small wind turbine, a motion-sensing robot, and even a re-designed lava lamp.
