{"id":505862,"date":"2021-12-16T09:23:45","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T14:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=505862"},"modified":"2022-11-28T14:02:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T19:02:39","slug":"undergraduate-explores-business-computer-science-and-leonard-bernstein-505862","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/undergraduate-explores-business-computer-science-and-leonard-bernstein-505862\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate finds room to explore business, computer science, and an American music icon"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Rochester\u2019s flexible curriculum gives Jacob Rose a chance to research Leonard Bernstein.<\/h2>\n<p>Jacob Rose \u201924 will spend winter break at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/research\/research-catalog\/bib\/b16655052\">New York Public Library<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/collections\/leonard-bernstein\/about-this-collection\/\">Library of Congress<\/a>, poring over more than 3,800 letters, notes, musical scores, and anything else relating to America\u2019s musical icon, Leonard Bernstein.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always admired him as a person,\u201d says Rose, who is researching how Bernstein helped American audiences gain a new appreciation for modern composers during the turbulent 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Rose is planning to <a href=\"http:\/\/rochester.edu\/college\/bsb\/undergraduate\/bs-degree.html\">major in business<\/a> with an emphasis on computer science at the <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a>. However, thanks to Rochester&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochester-curriculum-freedom-interdisciplinary-296412\/\">open curriculum<\/a>, Rose also has the flexibility to explore his passion for music, which began when he started piano lessons at age 5.<\/p>\n<p>Rose intends to minor in music and in audio and music engineering. He\u2019s taken piano lessons at the University\u2019s renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esm.rochester.edu\/\">Eastman School of Music<\/a>. He\u2019s even provided keyboard accompaniment for several student vocal groups and musical ensembles, most recently playing in the pit orchestra for a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/ccc.rochester.edu\/oboc\/home\/\">Off Broadway On Campus<\/a> showcase.<\/p>\n<p>And Rose received a Meliora Scholars award of $3,000 to support his research project on Bernstein, which will likely result in a research paper, presentation, or both.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A closer look at the composer, conductor, humanitarian<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_506482\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-506482\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-506482\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/bernstein-1955-resized-630x525.jpg\" alt=\"leonard bernstein sits at the piano and makes a notation on sheet music\" width=\"630\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/bernstein-1955-resized-630x525.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/bernstein-1955-resized-768x641.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/bernstein-1955-resized.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-506482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leonard Bernstein in 1955 (Library of Congress)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to music critic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1990\/10\/15\/obituaries\/leonard-bernstein-72-music-s-monarch-dies.html\">Donal Henahan<\/a>, Bernstein was \u201cone of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history.\u201d The celebrated composer of <em>West Side Story<\/em> was the first American-born conductor to lead a major American symphony orchestra and the first conductor to share and explore music on television with a mass audience, including a popular series of Young People\u2019s Concerts. He was also a Vietnam War protestor, and a staunch advocate of civil rights, nuclear disarmament, and HIV\/AIDS research and awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Rose says he first became familiar with Bernstein by performing and listening to his music from <em>West Side Story<\/em>. \u201cBut I\u2019ve also been listening to a lot of the pieces he conducted,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Rose, who is from Baltimore, MD, also follows Marin Alsop, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra conductor who studied under Bernstein. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marinalsop.conductor\/?hl=en\">Instagram posts<\/a> and concert notes furthered his interest in Bernstein, as did her foreword in <em>Leonard Bernstein Young People\u2019s Concerts<\/em> by Alicia Kopfstein-Penk.<\/p>\n<div class=\"side-right\">\n<h3>Leonard Bernstein and Rochester<\/h3>\n<p>Rochester-based journalist Michael Nighan <a href=\"https:\/\/talkerofthetown.com\/2021\/02\/04\/leonard-bernstein-and-the-best-disguised-dead-end-in-the-world\/\">reports that<\/a>: In 1945, Leonard Bernstein credited Eastman School of Music faculty member Margaret Grant for helping to start his career by introducing him to Serge Koussevitzky, conductor of the Boston Philharmonic and an important influence in Bernstein\u2019s musical life. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra passed over a chance to hire Bernstein as its conductor in 1947. During the screening period, Bernstein conducted the RPO six times and took it on a six-state, eight-city concert tour.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, University of Rochester alumna Elizabeth Wells \u201904E (PhD) wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/pr\/Review\/V76N1\/1001_masterclass.html\">an award-winning book<\/a> on Bernstein\u2019s <em>West Side Story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Bernstein\u2019s daughter, Jamie, a writer, broadcaster, and narrator, gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/keeping-leonard-bernstein-alive-for-the-current-generation-367712\/\">lecture on her father\u2019s legacy<\/a> at the University of Rochester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>After consulting with Joan Rubin, the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Director of the Humanities Center, and Matthew BaileyShea, associate professor of music and chair of the Arthur Satz Department of Music, Rose decided to focus his Meliora Scholars project specifically on Bernstein\u2019s relationship to what was defined as \u201cpopular\u201d music in his times and compare that with the \u201ccurrent reckoning that classical music is going through,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs musicians, we are trying to introduce new styles and genres of music, heading away from the tradition of performing the music of mainly old, white, European composers. I will be looking at Bernstein as both a composer and an educator, and to what extent he transformed the world of music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of his research so far has been online or reading books from the University\u2019s music and arts collections.
