{"id":517662,"date":"2022-04-05T09:49:18","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T13:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=517662"},"modified":"2022-04-05T13:20:10","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T17:20:10","slug":"laser-lab-springboards-100-plus-high-schoolers-to-doctoral-degrees-517662","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/laser-lab-springboards-100-plus-high-schoolers-to-doctoral-degrees-517662\/","title":{"rendered":"Laser Lab springboards 100-plus high schoolers to doctoral degrees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/\">Laboratory for Laser Energetics<\/a> (LLE) annually hosts a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/index.php\/education\/summer-research-program-for-high-school-juniors\/\">summer research program<\/a> for Rochester-area students who have just completed their junior year of high school. The program, which began 32 years ago, recently reached a significant milestone: more than 100 of its participants have gone on to earn their doctoral degrees.<\/p>\n<p>For eight weeks during the summer, high school students are paired with LLE staff scientists to gain real-world experience working on research projects at one of the nation\u2019s leading laser facilities. Over the years, nearly 400 high school students have participated in the program, which is one of several at Rochester designed to educate the next generation of scientists and engineers. The program was started by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pas.rochester.edu\/people\/faculty\/meyerhofer_david\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David Meyerhofer<\/strong><\/a>, a visiting professor of physics, who served as program director from 1989 to 1997. Jin is currently pursuing a combined MD\/PhD degree in biomedical engineering at Duke University School of Medicine. Wegman received a BS degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Rochester and a PhD from the University of Florida. Merkulova received a PhD from SUNY Downstate Medical Center School of Graduate Studies in neural and behavioral science.
