{"id":520402,"date":"2022-04-28T16:26:49","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T20:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=520402"},"modified":"2022-05-05T14:00:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T18:00:43","slug":"finding-art-in-the-tools-of-science-520402","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/finding-art-in-the-tools-of-science-520402\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding art in the tools of science"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">The annual competition drew more than 50 entries this year, with more than 700 votes cast for People\u2019s Choice.<\/h2>\n<p>Students, faculty, and staff at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> found creative ways to turn bacterial cells, the refraction of light, salivary glands, and oil spills into winning entries this year in the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/news\/art-of-science.html\">Art of Science Competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the competition, held each spring and sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences<\/a> in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.rochester.edu\/\">River Campus Libraries<\/a>, is to \u201cexplore and illuminate the aesthetic beauty that results when science, art, and technology intersect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-four submissions were received, according to Brian McIntyre, director of operations at URNano and one of the organizers of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Student prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place were awarded by a panel of judges, including administrators, librarians, and faculty from River Campus Libraries and the Hajim School.<\/p>\n<p>All entries were eligible for the People\u2019s Choice Award of $250, determined by ballots cast by 711 members of the University community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again, our students, faculty, and staff found unique ways to communicate science in engaging and accessible ways,\u201d says Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School. \u201cWe applaud their creativity. We are grateful for the enthusiastic response from the University community in selecting the People\u2019s Choice Award. Meyer, associate professor of biology<\/h4>\n<p>Artist\u2019s statement:<br \/>\n<i>Bioglass-coated bacterial cells were imaged using fluorescence microscopy. <\/i><i>A laser was used to excite a fluorescent agarose pad and differing angles\u00a0of incoming light were manipulated to scatter light off the surface of\u00a0the cells. The cellular structures are inspired by a mouse salivary gland immunohistochemical stain which was then imaged through confocal microscopy.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Science to an onlooker may seem cold and uninspiring due to the microscopic size of the structures studied. By projecting these cells on the sky, suddenly they are no longer small. Without the ability to repel water and insulate from the cold water, birds and mammals will die from hypothermi<\/em><em>a. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When oil is spilled into an aquatic environment, it can harm organisms that live on or around the water surface and those that live under water.
