The Dodo was first discovered in Mauritius in 1598.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So far, the grassroots effort has grabbed the attention of people on six continents who have participated in more than 30 celebrations, including a city-wide poetry contest, flying flags, elementary school sporting events, and calls to prayer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54942\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54942 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Grenada-630x454.jpg\" alt=\"children by a mural\" width=\"630\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Grenada-630x454.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Grenada.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In February, a team of artists from the Ngecha Artist Association in Kenya worked with villagers to create a mural in honor of the people of Grenada on Grenada\u2019s Independence Day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_55122\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55122\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55122\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/accordian2.jpg\" alt=\"man playing accordian outside next to woman reading\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In April, Rosa Kristin Juliusdottir of Akureyri in northern Iceland organized a celebration to honor Ireland\u2019s struggle for independence. She and her friends made banners with ancient Celtic symbols, recited Irish poetry and literary texts, played Irish music, sang, and feasted on Irish food.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55012\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55012\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/tablesetting.jpg\" alt=\"tea and table setting\" width=\"280\" height=\"210\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In February, Faeeza Masood \u201910 \u201911W (MS) of Pittsford, N.Y., honored Kuwait\u2019s Independence Day with an extra special tea time in memory of friend from Kuwait.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br \/>\n\u201cBy recognizing someone else\u2019s independence, you\u2019re showing that you care about his or her well-being in the same way you care about your own,\u201d says Layton, who adds that the idea behind the project is to promote \u201cfreedom for all, not just for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_56512\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56512\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-56512 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Bri-Heath-runtogether-Sudan1-630x356.jpg\" alt=\"people carrying flags, running on a beach\" width=\"630\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Bri-Heath-runtogether-Sudan1-630x356.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Bri-Heath-runtogether-Sudan1-1024x579.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In January, Layton and Bailey read the book \u201cRunning for My Life: One Lost Boy\u2019s Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games\u201d and flew flags in California to celebrate Sudan and South Sudan\u2019s Independence Day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Layton and Bailey see the project as a stance against colonization in all forms, including that which is based upon race, class, religion, gender, and nationality.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55032\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55032\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/haiku-630x418.jpg\" alt=\"Sign on top of building: '#Haikus4Gambia'\" width=\"630\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/haiku-630x418.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/haiku.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55032\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In February, IB\u00e9 of Minnesota invited 49 poets in the Twin Cities to write 49 haikus inspired by the Gambia. After obtaining funding through Kickstarter, the poems were broadcast on billboards throughout the city. To learn more about the project, visit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.HaikusforGambia.com\">www.HaikusforGambia.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their previous projects include Home Drone, a multimedia exhibit that challenged the U.S. government\u2019s drone program.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55022\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55022\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55022\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/beachwriting-630x422.jpg\" alt=\"'Hola Sre Lanka from Nicaragua' written in beach sand\" width=\"630\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/beachwriting-630x422.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/beachwriting.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55022\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In February, while visiting Nicaragua, Anne Esse from Rochester, N.Y., took time to acknowledge Sri Lanka\u2019s independence.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be an artist to participate and no act is too great or too small,\u201d says Bailey. \u201cWhether it\u2019s wearing another country\u2019s colors to work or taking time out to cook a traditional meal from another country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Bailey, plans are currently underway for celebrations like a dart tournament in Nagaland in honor of Egypt, and an arts festival in Fullerton, California, in honor of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55002\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55002\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-55002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/flagholders-630x354.jpg\" alt=\"women on a mountain top, holding Guyana's flag\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/flagholders-630x354.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/flagholders.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In March, Lori Beer, Maribel Pregnall, and their students celebrated Guyana\u2019s Independence Day by hiking to the top of a mountain in the Hudson Valley, New York (USA) carrying the country\u2019s flag.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As of July 1, 40 of the 59 independence days, including the U.S., Canada, Egypt, and Pakistan have yet to take place.
