{"id":532792,"date":"2022-09-12T16:40:09","date_gmt":"2022-09-12T20:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=532792"},"modified":"2023-05-17T10:38:02","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T14:38:02","slug":"disability-arts-ensemble-kinetic-light-sloan-performing-arts-center-532792","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/disability-arts-ensemble-kinetic-light-sloan-performing-arts-center-532792\/","title":{"rendered":"Disability arts ensemble Kinetic Light performs at the Sloan Performing Arts Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"width: 85%; font-weight: bold; line-height: 135%; margin-bottom: 0.5em;\">Kinetic Light creates, performs, and teaches at the intersections of access, queerness, disability, dance, and race.<\/h2>\n<p>The internationally recognized disability arts ensemble <a href=\"https:\/\/kineticlight.org\">Kinetic Light<\/a> performed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/sloan-performing-arts-center\/index.html\">Sloan Performing Arts Center<\/a> as part of the group\u2019s fall 2022 East Coast tour. Using art, technology, design, and dance, Kinetic Light creates, performs, and teaches at the intersections of access, queerness, disability, dance, and race.<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble\u2019s Laurel Lawson and Alice Sheppard presented <em>Under Momentum<\/em>, a duet that \u201ccelebrates the joys of continuous motion, the allure of speed, the beautiful futility of resisting gravity,\u201d according to the artists. Lawson and Sheppard\u2014both wheelchair users\u2014performed on a series of ramps designed by artist and design researcher Sara Hendren. The show offered an accessible theater experience through accessible seating, sensory kits, quiet space, ASL interpreters, and audio description through the Audimance app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir performance celebrated the joy of motion and the complexity of relationships in such a beautiful and moving way, and I was really thrilled that many members of the wide Rochester disability community joined us,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/people\/faculty\/smith-missy\/index.html\">Missy Pfohl Smith<\/a>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/PerformingArts\/\">Institute for the Performing Arts<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/dan\/\">Program of Dance and Movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company was in residence at Rochester from September 5\u20139, 2022, engaging students and the community in workshops as well as performance.<\/p>\n<p>Says Pfohl Smith: \u201cTheir residency taught us how access is aesthetic, cultural, and ongoing, and our work now is to continue to work towards creating a more equitable audience experience for everyone at every show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presented by the Program of Dance and Movement, the residency was made possible through an ArtsConnect grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midatlanticarts.org\">Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation<\/a>, University Advancement\u2019s Schwartz Fund for the Humanities and Performing Arts, and additional support from the University\u2019s Institute for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div class=\"large-up-3\">\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/dance-concert-showcases-the-interplay-of-lights-music-and-action-in-a-brand-new-space-502532\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/fea-confluence.jpg\" alt=\"dancer does a split in the air\" \/><strong>Dance concert showcases the interplay of lights, music, and action in a brand-new space<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: .9em;\">The Sloan Performing Arts Center serves as a new campus site for students, faculty, and guest artists to perform original choreography.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/blind-student-finds-support-eastman-school-of-music-518512\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/fea-eshaan-sood-eastman-school-of-music.jpg\" alt=\"Eshaan Sood, dressed in tuxedo and in performance hall with guitar resting on knee.\" \/><strong>Blinded in an accident, guitar student finds community at Eastman<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: .9em;\">\u201cI know I have a major disability, but I don\u2019t lead my life with that in the forefront,\u201d says jazz guitarist and Eastman student Eshaan Sood \u201925E.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/faculty-students-and-local-indigenous-community-come-together-for-performances-and-conversation-523342\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fea-Alleghany-River-Dancers.jpg\" alt=\"Two dancers, one an adult and one a child, dressed in traditional Native American dress perform in Wilson Commons.\" \/><strong>Faculty, students, and local Indigenous community come together for performances and conversation<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: .9em;\">\u201cUR Remnants\u201d welcomed members of the local Indigenous and arts communities to tell Native American stories through performance and conversation with faculty and students.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The internationally recognized ensemble Kinetic Light performed at the Sloan Performing Arts Center as part of the group\u2019s fall 2022 East Coast tour.
