In a return to tradition, the University\u2019s annual celebration welcomed thousands of alumni, students, family members, and guests to campus.<\/h2>\n

More than 6,000 members of the University of Rochester<\/a> community came together from September 29 to October 2 in person for the first full-fledged Meliora Weekend since 2019. The traditional fall event\u2014which was postponed in 2020 and modified in 2021<\/a> to accommodate COVID-19 health and safety protocols\u2014combines reunion, family weekend, and homecoming into four days of gatherings, activities, celebrations, performances, and conversations.<\/p>\n

CALL TO ACTION:<\/strong> During the University Symposium, Nobel laureate and former US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu \u201970 reflected on the obstacles to achieving a sustainable future\u2014from the pervasive \u201cuse once, throw away\u201d consumption mindset to the need for cutting-edge energy storage technologies. “This is our home. We have to preserve it,\u201d he told the audience in the Palestra while noting potential solutions, including recent advances in synthetic biology and lithium batteries.<\/p>\n

CHEERS TO THE NEXT 100 YEARS:<\/strong>\u00a0Meliora Weekend was the capstone of the Eastman School of Music\u2019s\u00a0Centennial Celebration<\/a>. Signature events included the Rochester premiere of\u00a0The Brightness of Light<\/em>, written by alumnus Kevin Puts \u201994E, \u201999E (DMA), at Eastman Theatre in Kodak Hall. The concert was performed by the Eastman Philharmonia (conducted by Neil Varon) and featured Assistant Professor of Voice and soprano Nicole Cabell \u201901E and baritone Rod Gilfry, with text from the letters of Georgia O\u2019Keeffe and Alfred Steiglitz.<\/p>\n

MEDxROCHESTER:<\/strong>\u00a0During his MED Talks presentation, Michael Hasselberg \u201907N (MS), \u201913N (PhD), founder of the UR Medicine telepsychiatry program and of Project ECHO, which uses technology to provide health care at a distance within rural hospitals, identified the key ingredient missing in early attempts to attract people to telemedicine clinics. \u201cIt occurred to us that telemedicine is ineffective without the biopsychosocial model. We realized it all comes back to Rochester and George Engel,\u201d he said. The School of Medicine and Dentistry\u2019s MED Talks feature Medical Center faculty who are at the forefront of scientific discovery and innovations. Hassleberg was joined by Roberto Hernandez-Alejando, who discussed the latest advances in addressing stage IV colon cancer, and Maiken Nedergaard, who shared her research about how brain waste products are removed during sleep.<\/p>\n

In 2010 Norris founded The Race Card Project, which invites people to share candid six-word stories about race. \u201cWe bring to the surface things that people don\u2019t often say out loud.
