{"id":538282,"date":"2022-10-25T14:40:10","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T18:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=538282"},"modified":"2024-12-09T13:37:54","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T18:37:54","slug":"2022-goergen-awards-for-undergraduate-teaching-innovations-538282","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/2022-goergen-awards-for-undergraduate-teaching-innovations-538282\/","title":{"rendered":"Three professors honored for undergraduate teaching innovations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Ajay Anand, Christopher Muir, and Pablo Sierra Silva all have reshaped departmental programs focused on experiential learning.<\/h2>\n<p>Although the recipients of this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/ourfaculty\/goergen\/\">Goergen Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching<\/a> work in different fields, they share two common traits: in addition to being\u00a0masters of innovative teaching at the <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.edu\">University of Rochester<\/a>, they each have deep commitments to experiential learning.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ajay Anand<\/strong>, an associate professor with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/\">Goergen Institute for Data Science<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Christopher Muir<\/strong>, a professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/me\/\">Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pablo Sierra Silva<\/strong>, an associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/\">Department of History<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The recipients will be honored on October 27 with a ceremony in the Feldman Ballroom in Frederick Douglass Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1997 by University Trustee and Board Chair Emeritus Robert Goergen \u201960 and his wife, Pamela, the award recognizes distinction in undergraduate teaching among faculty in Arts, Sciences &amp; Engineering at the University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s awardees are all innovators who have shaped and reshaped their programs, creating a better, more immersive experience for students,\u201d says Jeffrey Runner, dean of the College. \u201cIn Chris Muir\u2019s hugely popular senior design class, students select their own project; Ajay Anand has grown his capstone projects from 20 to 110 in six years, connecting students with 70 corporate sponsors; and Pablo Sierra Silva puts students back in time in his classes, as they take on sometimes uncomfortable but important roles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nominations come from students, faculty, staff members, and administrators. The winners are chosen by Runner; Gloria Culver, dean of the School of Arts &amp; Sciences; and Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Anand joined the University in 2017 and also serves as deputy director of the Goergen Institute for Data Science. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from the University of Bombay, India; master\u2019s degrees from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of Washington; and a doctorate from the University of Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Muir came to the University in 2014. He earned a bachelor\u2019s, a master\u2019s, and a doctoral degree from Lehigh University.<\/p>\n<p>Sierra Silva joined the University in 2013. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a master\u2019s and doctorate from the University of California, Los
