{"id":557682,"date":"2023-05-04T14:39:44","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T18:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=557682"},"modified":"2024-04-26T12:45:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T16:45:25","slug":"undergraduate-student-submissions-sweep-art-of-science-awards-557682","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/undergraduate-student-submissions-sweep-art-of-science-awards-557682\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate student submissions sweep Art of Science awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The annual competition highlights the intersection of science, art, and technology as part of the Rochester experience.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> students, faculty, and staff showcased the beauty of everything from camouflaged spiders to jets of high velocity plasma at the 13th annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/news\/art-of-science.html\">Art of Science Competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 Rochester community members submitted entries to explore and illuminate the aesthetic beauty that results when science, art, and technology intersect.<\/p>\n<p>Held each spring and\u00a0sponsored by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences\u00a0<\/a>in collaboration with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.rochester.edu\/\">River Campus Libraries<\/a>, the competition offers student prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place. All entries were eligible for the People\u2019s Choice Award of $250, with this year\u2019s winner receiving 563 votes. Undergraduate students\u2019 submissions swept all of the categories, including honorable mentions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis competition is all about taking science and engineering concepts that may be very hard to understand and turning them into something that really draws you to want to learn more,\u201d says Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School. \u201cCongratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who submitted an entry or voted. Special thanks to the Art of Science Committee for organizing this year\u2019s competition, and to our panel of judges.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3><strong>First Place<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-557702 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Islam-e1683141898702.jpg\" alt=\"orb with orange and yellow swirls\" width=\"300\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fateema Islam \u201924, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bio\/undergraduate\/bbc.html\">biochemistry<\/a> student, won first place for <em>Ochre Complex<\/em>. Islam used a camera phone to capture an image of a ferrous material sample as it was going through a rotovap, or rotary evaporator device. Upon receiving the award, she said, \u201cI think this piece really shows that if you take a step back from scientific work, we can really notice that there\u2019s really intense beauty around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3><strong>Second Place<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-557762 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/art-Ruiz-e1683142261511.jpg\" alt=\"red cerebrospinal fluid flowing through a vein-like vessel.\" width=\"500\" height=\"497\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Second place was awarded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/undergraduate\/index.html\">biomedical engineering<\/a> student Antonio Ladron de Guevara Ruiz \u201924 for <em>Cerebrospinal fluid flows through wide perivascular spaces into the brain<\/em>. His submission featured superimposed particle tracks illustrating the entry of cerebrospinal fluid into the brain through periarterial spaces.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3><strong>Third Place<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-557782 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/art-Zhang.jpg\" alt=\"drawing of person's head topped with a cage as blue and yellow birds fly out.\" width=\"513\" height=\"502\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Glen Zhang \u201925, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bcs\/neuro\/index.html\">neuroscience<\/a> student, won third place for <em>Death before Death<\/em>. The submission is an artistic representation of Alzheimer\u2019s disease inspired by Zhang\u2019s grandfather\u2019s battle with the neurodegenerative brain disorder before his death.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3><strong>People&#8217;s Choice Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-557802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/art-Shi.jpg\" alt=\"impressionism-style image of a robot painting at an easel.\" width=\"500\" height=\"376\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s People\u2019s Choice Award went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/undergraduate\/index.html\">computer science<\/a> student Qingjian Shi \u201926 for <em>Robot\u2019s Expression of Individuality.<\/em> In the submission statement, Shi said the work depicted a \u201cretro-futuristic robot expressing itself and what it feels while contrasting mechanical and fluidity of nature in Monet style.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3><strong>Honorable Mentions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Honorable mentions went to <em>Please Don\u2019t Tap on the Glass<\/em> (top) by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/me\/undergraduate\/index.html\">mechanical engineering<\/a> student Katie Jarvis \u201925 and to <em>The Fractals of Cactus <\/em>(bottom) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/undergraduate\/index.html\">optical engineering<\/a> student Benjamin Margulies
