With her election, Bentley joins the SPIE presidential chain. She will serve as president-elect in 2025, and as the society\u2019s president in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Bentley\u00a0is an expert in the design and engineering of optical systems. She is the 2022 recipient of the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bravo\/2022-04-28-bentley-outstanding-faculty.html\">Edmund A. Hajim Outstanding Faculty Award<\/a>, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/2014-goergen-awards-honors-professors-for-excellence-in-teaching\/\">2014 recipient of the University\u2019s Goergen Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award<\/a>. In 2019, she received the RRPC Education Award from the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"Cerulli\"><strong>Catherine Cerulli honored by Houses on the Moon theatre company<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Domestic violence expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/26580586-catherine-cerulli\">Catherine Cerulli<\/a>, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will be honored at the New York City\u2013based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/off-broadway\/article\/Houses-on-The-Moon-to-Honor-Rashad-V-Chambers-and-Dr-Kate-Cerulli-at-AMPLIFY-2023-Gala-Celebration-20230801\">Houses on the Moon<\/a> theater company\u2019s AMPLIFY 2023 Gala in October. The organization recognizes Cerulli for \u201cher groundbreaking work in mental health and her commitment to the arts,\u201d which have brought \u201cimmense healing and awareness to countless lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For over three decades, Cerulli has worked in a variety of roles\u2014as counselor, attorney, and researcher\u2014on issues surrounding domestic violence and mental health. A longtime advocate for human rights and marginalized people, she is the director of both the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/sba\/\">Susan B. Anthony Center<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/psychiatry\/research\/victimization.aspx\">Laboratory of Interpersonal Violence and Victimization<\/a>. In 1995, as an assistant district attorney in New York\u2019s Monroe County, she created a special misdemeanor domestic violence unit.<\/p>\n<p>Cerulli is also a member of the multidisciplinary team that, led by the University\u2019s Mt. Hope Family Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/mt-hope-family-center-grant-for-national-center-child-maltreatment-studies-557282\/\">recently received an 8.5 million grant renewal<\/a> from the National Institutes of Health to continue its national resource center, which conducts research to prevent and treat child maltreatment. Part of that work involves a collaboration with Houses on the Moon to develop a theatrical production and an educator resource toolkit designed to help school systems address child abuse and neglect by focusing on resiliency.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read more about Cerulli\u2019s work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/what-is-intimate-partner-violence-domestic-violence-516342\/\">intimate partner violence<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"Kells\"><strong>Meredith Kells named a Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine fellow<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Meredith Kells, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/adolescenthealth.org\/membership\/become-an-fsahm\/sahm-fellows\/\">named a fellow<\/a> of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM). Kells, a pediatric nurse practitioner and researcher whose work centers on the care of adolescents and young adults with eating disorders, has been an active member of SAHM for about a decade in both New York and the New England region. (Photos provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"Milder\"><strong>Awards bestowed on Avram Milder and David Turnbull at IFSA conference<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Two researchers at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) have been recognized with awards at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bravuratechnologies.wixsite.com\/ifsa2023\">International Conference on Inertial Fusion Sciences and Applications<\/a> (IFSA): Avram Milder \u201921 (PhD) and David Turnbull.<\/p>\n<p>Milder, a scientist in the Laser\u2013Plasma Interactions Group at LLE, has been selected to receive the Chiyoe Yamanaka Award for his trailblazing measurements of electron distribution functions performed at the Omega Laser Facility that has opened a new avenue for researchers exploring fundamental plasma-physics. The Yamanaka award is given to early-career scientists in the spirit of Chiyoe Yamanaka, a pioneer of inertial fusion sciences and applications.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ream more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/avi-milder-selected-to-receive-chiyoe-yamanaka-award\/\">Milder\u2019s seminal technique<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>David Turnbull, the Laser\u2013Plasma Interactions Group Leader, is a recipient of the 2023 Edouard Fabre Prize for his pioneering contributions to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) through innovative laser\u2013plasma instability studies. The prize is named in honor of one of the founders of ICF and recognizes active researchers within 15 years of earning a doctoral degree.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/david-turnbull-selected-for-2023-edouard-fabre-prize\/\">Turnbull\u2019s contributions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"Renninger\"><strong>William Renninger receives DARPA Young Faculty Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/people\/faculty\/renninger_william\/index.html\">William Renninger<\/a>, an associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/index.html\">optics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pas.rochester.edu\/\">physics<\/a>, received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/work-with-us\/for-universities\/young-faculty-award\">Young Faculty Award<\/a> (YFA) from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The YFA program aims to identify and engage rising stars in junior research positions, emphasizing those without prior DARPA funding, and expose them to US Department of Defense needs and DARPA\u2019s program development process. The YFA program provides funding, mentoring, and industry and DoD contacts to awardees early in their careers so they may develop their research ideas in the context of national security needs.<\/p>\n<p>Renninger, who recently received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/february-2023-faculty-awards-accolades-552252\/#renninger\">Optica\u2019s 2023 Adolph Lomb Medal<\/a>, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochester-scientists-receive-nsf-career-awards-415302\/\">previous NSF CAREER award winner<\/a> who studies experimental light-matter interactions. His research group focuses on ultrafast nonlinear optics for applications including imaging deep into the brain, photon-phonon interactions for applications including for telecommunications and quantum computing, and optical systems for ultra-high-speed computing. (University of Rochester School of Nursing photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"Zhang\"><strong>Chen Zhang recognized as ANAC\u2019s Researcher of the Year<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Chen Zhang, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing, has been honored with the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care\u2019s (ANAC) top research award. She\u00a0will accept the 2023 Researcher\/Impact Award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursesinaidscare.org\/i4a\/pages\/index.cfm?pageid=4623\">36th Annual ANAC Conference<\/a> in New Orleans.
