According to their students and colleagues, in the classroom they\u2019re innovative, experimental, and empowering.<\/p>\n<p>The 2023 recipients, all faculty in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/\">Arts, Sciences &amp; Engineering<\/a> at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/rel\/people\/faculty\/downey_jack\/index.html\">Jack Downey<\/a>, the John Henry Newman Chair in Roman Catholic Studies in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/rel\/\">Department of Religion and Classics<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/writing.rochester.edu\/people\/gegg-harrison_whitney\/index.html\">Whitney Gegg-Harrison<\/a> \u201914 (PhD), an associate professor with the <a href=\"https:\/\/writing.rochester.edu\/\">Writing, Speaking, and Argument<\/a> program<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/people\/faculty\/mcgrath_james\/index.html\">James McGrath<\/a>, the William J. Kenan Jr. Professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/\">Department of Biomedical Engineering<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Established in 1997 by University Trustee and Board Chair Emeritus Robert Goergen \u201960 and his wife, Pamela, the award recognizes distinction in undergraduate teaching among faculty in Arts, Sciences &amp; Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations come from students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The winners were chosen by Jeffrey Runner, dean of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/academics\/\">College<\/a>; Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/\">Hajim School of Engineering &amp; Applied Sciences<\/a>; and Duje Tadin, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bcs\/about\/index.html\">Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences<\/a> who served as interim dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/\">School of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year I am amazed at the creative ways our faculty engage our students inside and outside of the classroom,\u201d Runner says. \u201cThis year is no exception with three outstanding examples of why the Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching was created: to acknowledge the creativity, skill, and care with which our faculty do their
