(University of Rochester School of Nursing photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"ghazal\"><strong>Lauren Ghazal recognized among STAT\u2019s top-emerging scientists<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/son.rochester.edu\/directory\/lghazal\/\">Lauren Ghazal<\/a> has been chosen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/wunderkinds-2023\/lauren-ghazal\/\">STAT Wunderkind<\/a>, a \u201cnext-generation scientific superstar,\u201d in a national contest that singles out young, high achievers from top research institutions. STAT, a respected news agency that exclusively covers health and medicine, created the annual \u201cWunderkind\u201d award to celebrate early-career researchers who are not yet independent scientists or program leaders. Ghazal, a family nurse practitioner and researcher, joined the University in July 2023 as an assistant professor at the School of Nursing and associate member of the Wilmot Cancer Institute\u2019s Cancer Prevention and Control Program.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discover Ghazal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/son.rochester.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/ghazal-stat-award.html\">work as a nurse scientist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"glade\"><strong>Rachel Glade named a Packard Fellow<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/people\/faculty\/glade-rachel\/index.html\">Rachel Glade<\/a>, an assistant professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/sas.rochester.edu\/ees\/\">earth and environmental sciences<\/a> and of <a href=\"http:\/\/hajim.rochester.edu\/me\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a>, has been named a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/insights\/news\/packard-fellowships-for-science-and-engineering-announces-2023-class-of-fellows\/\">2023 Packard Fellow<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/\">David and Lucile Packard Foundation<\/a>. Every year, the foundation honors 20 science and engineering professors across the United States who are pursuing research early in their careers. Each honoree receives a five-year grant of $875,000 to pursue their research.<\/p>\n<p>Glade\u2019s research focuses on connecting Earth science with soft matter physics, the study of \u201csquishy\u201d mixtures of fluids and particles that have an enhanced ability to become deformed. These mixtures can behave in complex and nonlinear ways, much like the way a cake can turn out differently if the ingredient ratios are even slightly altered. Specifically, she studies sediment dynamics on Earth and planetary landscapes with the goal of understanding deformations on the surface of Earth and how landscapes are formed. In that way, she strives to come up with better ways of predicting landslides, floods, coastal erosion, and other hazards. (Photo provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"hoque\"><strong>Ehsan Hoque receives 10-Year Impact Award from UbiComp community<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/people\/faculty\/hoque_m.ehsan\/index.html\">Ehsan Hoque<\/a>, an associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/index.html\">Department of Computer Science<\/a>, received recognition for his pioneering work and its long-term effect on the field of human-AI interaction. Hoque is the <a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/2493432.2493502\">first author on a paper<\/a> that received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubicomp.org\/ubicomp-iswc-2023\/awards\/ubicomp-iswc-2023-awards\/\">10-Year Impact Award<\/a> by the Association for Computing Machinery\u2019s (ACM) pervasive and ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) community. Other authors on the paper include Matthieu Courgeon, Jean-Claude Martin, Bilge Mutlu, and Rosalind Picard.<\/p>\n<p>The paper details the MACH (My Automated Conversation coacH) system, an animated character with vision and hearing capability that can respond in real time while people practice social interactions in private. Created for Hoque\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hoques.com\/Publications\/2013\/Hoque-PhD-Thesis-MIT.pdf\">PhD thesis<\/a>\u00a0at MIT, the system yielded the first scientific evidence that it is possible for humans to improve their face-to-face interpersonal skills through a virtual assistant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis paper explored the potential of vision-based conversational interfaces in enhancing human skills\u2014from acing job interviews and mastering public speaking to assisting individuals with autism,\u201d says Hoque. \u201cThis concept inspired the \u2018presenter coach\u2019 feature in Microsoft PowerPoint, now utilized daily by millions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper caught immediate attention at the time it was published, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubicomp.org\/ubicomp2013\/\">winning a best paper award at UbiComp 2013<\/a>. It helped propel Hoque to a bevy of awards and accolades, including receiving a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/hoque-receives-world-technology-award-205102\/\">World Technology Award<\/a>\u00a0in 2016, as well as being named to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/ehsan-hoque-an-mit-innovator-under-35-177152\/\">MIT\u2019s Top 35 Innovators under 35<\/a>,\u00a0an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/hoque-an-inaugural-member-of-future-of-computing-academy\/\">inaugural member of the ACM Future of Computing Academy<\/a>\u00a0in 2017, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/editors-picks\/sn10-scientists-to-watch-2017\"><em>Science News<\/em>\u00a010 Scientists to Watch List for 2017<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nam.edu\/national-academy-of-medicine-announces-10-emerging-leaders-in-health-and-medicine\/\">one of 10 new emerging leaders<\/a>\u00a0selected by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam.edu\/\">National Academy of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0in 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoque accepted the award at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubicomp.org\/ubicomp-iswc-2023\/\">UbiComp 2023 conference in Canc\u00fan, Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/ehsan-hoque-10-scientists-watch-computer-science-272272\/\">Hoque\u2019s path as a scientist<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"leonhardt-caprio\"><strong>Ann Leonhardt-Caprio recognized for American Heart Association leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/22509925-ann-m-leonhardt-caprio\">Ann Leonhardt-Caprio<\/a> was honored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/affiliates\/new-york\/rochester\">American Heart Association<\/a> for her work on the local and national levels. The assistant professor of clinical nursing and program coordinator of the the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/stroke-center.aspx\">Comprehensive Stroke Center<\/a> at Strong Memorial Hospital received the Leadership Legacy Award, which recognizes her exceptional service to the Eastern States Region of the American Heart Association as a longtime volunteer. (University of Rochester photo \/ Jeff Witherow)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"ross\"><strong>Lainie Ross elected to the National Academy of Medicine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/32483444-helaine-ross\">Lainie Ross<\/a> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/nam.edu\/national-academy-of-medicine-elects-100-new-members-2023\/\">elected to the National Academy of Medicine<\/a> (NAM), an organization comprising the best of the best in American health care and academic medicine. Academy members are elected by their peers and provide expert advice nationally and internationally on health, medicine, and related policy.<\/p>\n<p>Ross, a pediatrician and philosopher, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/news\/story\/lainie-friedman-ross-named-inaugural-chair-of-health-humanities-and-bioethics\">joined the Medical Center in 2023<\/a> as the inaugural chair of the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics and director of the Paul M. Schyve, MD, Center for Bioethics. She is recognized by NAM for her nearly three decades of work on ethical and policy issues related to organ transplantation, genetics and genomics, clinical research ethics, human subject protections, and pediatrics. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research from the American Physical Society.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"turnbull\"><strong>David Turnbull receives Stix Award for plasma physics research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>David Turnbull, the Laser\u2013Plasma Interactions Group Leader at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, has been awarded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.org\/programs\/honors\/prizes\/stix.cfm\">2023 Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research<\/a>. The award recognizes an early-career researcher who has made outstanding theoretical, experimental, computational, or technical contributions in plasma physics. Turnbull is being honored for his \u201cpioneering experimental work on plasma photonics in the pursuit of laser-plasma applications, including Raman amplification, plasma optics, and inertial confinement fusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The award will be given in person at the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics\u2019 annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Turnbull was recently bestowed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/september-2023-faculty-awards-accolades-568752\/#Milder\">2023 Edouard Fabre Prize<\/a> for his research contributions to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) through innovative laser\u2013plasma instability studies. They were among 250 distinguished nurse leaders representing 40 states and 13 countries chosen for the academy\u2019s largest cohort to date. The academy comprises nearly 3,000 nursing leaders who are experts in policy, research, administration, practice, and academia who champion health and wellness, locally and globally. Induction into the academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader\u2019s career, in which their accomplishments are honored by their colleagues within and outside the
