Plus, enjoy a video recap of 2023.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>From a windowless basement classroom in Meliora Hall to a twilight aerial view of the city, University photographer J. Adam Fenster has captured the scope of life at the <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> throughout the year, frame by frame. As we close out 2023, we talked to Fenster about some of his favorite selections from the thousands of pictures he made this year\u2014and some behind-the-scenes insight into what made each moment memorable.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Fenster isn\u2019t the only communications professional with a special perspective on life at Rochester\u2014AJ Pow, the University&#8217;s senior video producer, also documents the myriad happenings on campus and beyond. Here\u2019s a kid who came to Rochester and is taking advantage of all the resources it has to offer. He\u2019s just working hard,\u201d says Fenster. \u201cWe took a lot of photos for this story, and it was hard to pick just one. This photo was taken during a practice session, where he\u2019s skating around\u2014and he\u2019s got this look on his face. He\u2019s so free and content. And what they do sounds cool and different\u2014and I\u2019ve never photographed anything like that before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here, Strong Hospital music therapist Molly Pow and student physical therapist Greg Lozier work with Sharon Slottle of Vestal, New York,\u00a0during a physical therapy session. Rochester is no exception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs someone who has photographed Match Day many times, it\u2019s overwhelming and an abundance of potential,\u201d shares Fenster. \u201cA lot of these reactions are unfolding around you\u2014it happens quickly, and it can be hard to know where to point your camera. Matt Wittmeyer, who photographed this year\u2019s Match Day, did a great job of capturing the joy experienced by people successfully matched, and that same joy shared by their families. It\u2019s rare to get a good, emotional photo that doesn\u2019t feel contrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/intimacy-directors-theater-intimacy-coordinators-on-screen-558652\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-588716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-03-31_Todd_Metamorphoses_intimacy_1844.jpg\" alt=\"Male college student sits upright on incline on a stage, balancing female college student who has her arms spread. Setting the show as its spring production offered the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/theatre\/\">International Theatre Program<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/intimacy-directors-theater-intimacy-coordinators-on-screen-558652\/\">an opportunity to introduce an intimacy director<\/a>: Sara Penner, a senior lecturer of theater in the Department of English and a voice and acting coach for the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a lot of pictures for this on a couple of different occasions\u2014and I took a lot of pictures of this exact moment,\u201d remembers Fenster. \u201cAs you\u2019re doing these things, you don\u2019t always know what you\u2019re looking for. But then all of a sudden it will present itself in front of you. There\u2019s sort of a triangle formed by the actors\u2014and then you\u2019ve got the intimacy director in the background. If this didn\u2019t have the intimacy director in the background, it\u2019s just another rehearsal. I like that she\u2019s not prominent in the photo, but she is present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had to be really careful,\u201d he adds. \u201cThese are young people, they\u2019re not professionals, and you\u2019re sticking a camera in their faces. Above, \u201cDrill Cart Charlie\u201d driver Ryan Eamer is cheered as he takes the lead after mechanical issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that this event exists,\u201d says Fenster. \u201cIt\u2019s so Rochester. The enthusiasm, the emotion. To get this photo, I\u2019m standing up on this little wall and putting the camera up over my head. You want to get all the racers, and all the people\u2014because that\u2019s really the story here. And capturing the quad: that identifies it as Rochester. And with Commencements comes celebration. Here, Naylea Santos, a digital studies and psychology major, sprays champagne on the Eastman Quadrangle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s a situation where you use a long lens, you isolate the subject. You set a high shutter speed, which freezes all those bubbles. The trees are turning green, finally, so you have an out-of-focus wall of color behind her. Here, water-damaged \u201csafety envelopes\u201d from the bursar\u2019s vault of the Titanic are scanned. Recovered in 1987 from the 1912 wreck, the envelopes were once labeled clearly with the names of the passengers whose valuables they contained. Obscured after decades underwater, Heyworth and his Lazarus Project team now seek to reveal those names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was inches away from something that was at the bottom of the ocean for 75-plus years,\u201d says Fenster, somewhat awed. \u201cI don\u2019t know how many people do what Heyworth does. It\u2019s pretty unique.\u201d Noting the intensity of the visual, Fenster adds that, \u201cthe red is just one of the many different colors they use to reveal what\u2019s hidden in these artifacts. How often do you see a big red burst captured in that way? It\u2019s enough to make you stop and wonder what\u2019s going on here\u2014and that\u2019s all you need. The purpose is to get someone to read the story. And I\u2019ve photographed these hawks up on the weathervane before\u2014but never two at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a technical standpoint, AJ made sure to lower the drone enough so that the weathervane sticks out against the skyline, as well as the hawks\u2019 heads. If he was a little bit higher, all that stuff would disappear. And then the photo wouldn\u2019t stick out. It wouldn\u2019t draw you in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain, it tells a story\u2014but in a quirky way,\u201d Fenster adds, laughing. \u201cWe have these serious fires up north, we were blanketed by smoke for days\u2014but that didn\u2019t stop these hawks from doing whatever they do on the library.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/pr\/Review\/V85N3\/4.2_corvette-engineer-alumnus-tadge-juechter-2023-summer-rochester-review.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-588786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-06-08_Tadge_Juechter_0264.jpg\" alt=\"Man stands, with arms crossed, in front of red, white, and blue Corvettes\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-06-08_Tadge_Juechter_0264.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-06-08_Tadge_Juechter_0264-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-06-08_Tadge_Juechter_0264-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2023-06-08_Tadge_Juechter_0264-660x440.jpg 660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Ready, \u2018Vette, go<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great alumni story,\u201d says Fenster of \u200b\u200bTadge Juechter \u201979, chief engineer and vehicle line director for Corvette at General Motors. Juechter is pictured above on a test track at General Motors Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan, with the four generations of Corvettes he has worked on during his 30 years with the division.<\/p>\n<p>Says Fenster: \u201cA lot of people don\u2019t know how much time you need with a person. Or at least how much time you need on-site to get what you think is a respectable photo to illustrate the story. I was art directing cars\u2014I\u2019ve never done that before. To me, it\u2019s the graphicness of the photo and the way the colors stand out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fenster and Luke Auburn, senior communications officer for engineering, traveled together for this story\u2014which rarely happens for Fenster. \u201cLuke\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/pr\/Review\/V85N3\/4.2_corvette-engineer-alumnus-tadge-juechter-2023-summer-rochester-review.html\">wrote a great piece to accompany these photos<\/a>. I love being part of a team to tackle stuff like this. Fenster took the photo via drone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put the drone up to get the full scope of the park. Two or three years ago we wouldn\u2019t have had the capability, but this illustrates the perfect situation where the drone is appropriate. You see the new part of the sculpture park and the outline of the museum. But also how it fits in with the surrounding area. It\u2019s important if you\u2019re trying to get a strong sense of place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe art is cool, and how it\u2019s oriented around the park is interesting. The worldwide iGEM competition is intended to push the boundaries of synthetic biology by tackling everyday issues facing the world. Under the guidance of faculty mentor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bio\/people\/faculty\/meyer_anne\/index.html\">Anne S. Meyer<\/a>, an associate professor of biology, the Rochester team\u2019s project involves producing engineered, 3-D-printed yeast and bacteria that work together to efficiently replicate useful chemicals found in plants endangered by climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would file this under \u2018science eye-candy.\u2019 Any time you have liquid nitrogen and you can add some light to it\u2014and light it in an interesting way\u2014it\u2019s eye-catching. And unlike the supercomputer that preceded it, this is basically a giant server rack. So it was a little harder to illustrate\u2014but no less important.\u201d Housed at the University\u2019s Primary Data Center and used by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lle.rochester.edu\/\">Laboratory for Laser Energetics<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/conesus-supercomputer-high-performance-computing-570552\/\">Conesus is on the most recent TOP500 list of the most powerful computer systems in the world and the GREEN500 list<\/a>, denoting the world\u2019s most energy-efficient supercomputers.<\/p>\n<p>For Fenster, this photo benefits from the angle. \u201cYou can pick up some of the texture from the floor. It\u2019s graphic. It\u2019s centered. And\u2014literally\u2014the light at the end of the tunnel sucks you in through the rest of the frame. Similar to the Memorial Art Gallery sculpture park, some thought went into the pattern. It\u2019s a container for what\u2019s happening on the inside, but someone cared enough to make it look interesting on the outside. Above, postdoctoral associate Xinxin Cai is pictured with such a refrigerator in the Nichol lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you illustrate quantum computing?\u201d asks Fenster. \u201cYou find the people who do it, and you find the place where they do it, and you find the equipment they use to do it. And that\u2019s all in this photo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of professors just want to do their research\u2014which I love. But a lot of them want to feature their PhD students and postdocs. They\u2019re just as proud of them as they are of the research. And that\u2019s teach,\u201d says Fenster. \u201cHe was really engaging, and I could see why he would receive this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis photo is a moment. I can\u2019t remember what was being said, but the photo tells the story of both Downey and his students. Hope Cemetery\u2014that\u2019s pretty interesting,\u201d notes Fenster of the study of blister beetle populations in a class taught by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bio\/people\/faculty\/minckley_robert\/index.php\">Robert Minckley<\/a>, a\u00a0professor of instruction in the Department of Biology. \u201cIt demonstrates the ability of students and faculty to get out of the classroom. They\u2019re going right next door. You can do your science in a lab, but also right beside the University. It feels uniquely Rochester.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m available, I\u2019ll go out and photograph this every year. And of course, I\u2019ll capture the beetles. But sometimes you step back and get the whole context. You have the compressed scene of the two students (Hanna Chin \u201924 (L) and Allison Tilburg \u201925) in the foreground. And then behind them are all these tombstones. It\u2019s kind of bizarre! What are they doing out there? You have the leaves changing color, the air gets a little more still and clear, and the light does what you want it to do. It comes from the right angles. Weather, time of day, time of year: those are all factors that come into play for an aerial shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a nice, warm day. I was all strapped in but my cameras weren\u2019t. So if we\u2019d banked, they would have rolled out. I wanted to stay up in the air for a couple of hours to get the sunset, what we call the \u2018blue hour,\u2019 and the twilight hour\u2014which is when this photo was taken. It\u2019s where the sun is already set, but the lights are starting to twinkle. I took thousands of images during that shoot. In November,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.rochester.edu\/spaces\/robbins\">Rossell Hope Robbins Library<\/a>\u00a0invited visitors to view pages of hand-written manuscripts spanning the Middle Ages from its collection by electric candlelight in the Great Hall. \u201cAny time you have flames\u2014even if they\u2019re fake\u2014in the dark, with old manuscripts, it just sounds cool, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s visually interesting, but it\u2019s also great that the library is opening up and putting out its collections for the University community to see\u2014and to not showcase these pieces traditionally under bright lights. You can see details, but only certain details due to the candlelight. Robert Witmer Jr. University Professor Sarah Mangelsdorf\u2014an accomplished scholar of child development\u2014gave a guest lecture in the child development class led by her husband,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bcs\/people\/faculty\/rosengren_karl\/index.html\">Karl Rosengren<\/a>, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences and of psychology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a charming moment between the president and her husband as she was giving a guest lecture in his class. I\u2019ve never been in a situation quite like that. At the very end, they went out in front of the class together. And I think the president was talking about some sort of scenario, and her husband was pretending to be offended. So I ripped off a couple of frames, and this is that. Graphically, the composition also works, but mostly it\u2019s about the moment and the obvious love they have for each other.
