(University of Rochester photo \/ Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to studying solar eclipses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> scholars have been at it a long time. Case in point: Alumnus William Harkness, whose observations of the sun\u2019s corona during a total solar eclipse in 1869 have been <a href=\"https:\/\/theworld.org\/stories\/2017-08-15\/what-will-we-learn-years-solar-eclipse\">hailed by some astronomers as a \u201clandmark discovery.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the time, few people had ever gotten a good look at the solar corona\u2014the outermost jacket of gases that make up the sun\u2019s atmosphere. The sun\u2019s blinding brilliance made studying anything in its immediate vicinity almost impossible. Only during eclipses did its radiant halo, the corona, become visible.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, astronomers of the day debated whether the ring of light revealed during an eclipse was the sun\u2019s atmosphere at all. Some thought it was just sunlight penetrating the Earth\u2019s atmosphere. Others speculated it was a lunar atmosphere.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-embed\">\n<div class=\"wp-embed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eclipse Helped Rochester Alumnus See Solar Corona in New Light\" width=\"1062\" height=\"597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R7PISeL13G4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Here comes the sun\u2019s corona<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Harkness helped put the debate to rest with his study of a solar eclipse on August 7, 1869, from a hilltop on the outskirts of Des Moines, Iowa, one of the cities in the eclipse\u2019s so-called path of totality.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_596932\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-596932\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-596932 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Harkness-1869-eclipse-008.jpg\" alt=\"Vintage illustration of a spectroscope.\" width=\"400\" height=\"568\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-596932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>SCOPED OUT:<\/strong> The spectroscope used by William Harkness to discover the coronal line <em>K 1474<\/em>. (From <em>Washington Observations for 1867<\/em>, courtesy of the University of Rochester Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Vital to his research was his use of a relatively new instrument called a spectroscope, a glass prism that splits light into a rainbow of colors emitted by specific atoms and molecules. The hues act like a key to identifying different elements.<\/p>\n<p>Affixing a spectroscope to a telescope enabled Harkness to observe a continuous green line ringing the sun as the moon slipped between it and the Earth and punched a hole of darkness in the daytime sky.<\/p>\n<p>As documented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=x03nAAAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PA66&amp;lpg=PA66&amp;dq=%22a+highly+rarefied+self-luminous+atmosphere+surrounding+the+sun,+and,+perhaps,+principally+composed+of+the+incandescent+vapor+of+iron.\">United States Naval Observatory<\/a>, Harkness concluded that the corona was \u201ca highly rarefied self-luminous atmosphere surrounding the sun, and, perhaps, principally composed of the incandescent vapor of iron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have succeeded beyond our most sanguine expectations,\u201d Harkness, who was a lieutenant commander and mathematics professor in the Navy at the time, wrote of his research in a telegraph to a colleague.<\/p>\n<p>His missive was widely reported in newspapers across the country, from the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/\">Deseret News<\/a><\/em> in Utah to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/\">Burlington Free Press<\/a><\/em> in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have one hundred and twenty-three photographs of the eclipse, two being of totality,\u201d he added. \u201c. . . Could see no absorption lines in the spectrum of the corona. It gave a continuous spectrum with one bright line on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His observations, which he photographed, were corroborated by those of Charles Augustus Young, an astronomy professor at Dartmouth College, who studied the same celestial event from a vantage point of roughly 160 miles east in Burlington, Iowa.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Harkness\u2019s observations would eventually help answer the question, \u2018Is the solar corona hotter than the sun?\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_596872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-596872\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-596872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/what-is-suns-solar-corona-definition-eclipse-corona-illustration.jpg\" alt=\"Rendering of the total solar eclipse and solar corona of August 1869.\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-596872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>HARKNESS AND LIGHT:<\/strong> The total solar eclipse of August 7, 1869, as documented by William Harkness during his work to learn about the physical constitution of the sun\u2019s corona, which is only visible during an eclipse. (Courtesy of the University of Rochester Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scientists hypothesized that the green line might be the emission of a new element of the sun, which came to be known as coronium. They studied that green line during eclipses for the next seven decades before concluding that coronium was not a new element, but rather iron stripped of half of its electrons.<\/p>\n<p>That finding suggested the solar corona was hotter\u2014millions of degrees hotter\u2014than the surface of the sun and has since helped the scientific community better understand how stars work.<\/p>\n<p>Harkness, a member of the Class of 1858, was 11 years on from graduating from the University of Rochester at the time of his discovery, but he kept his alma mater in mind throughout his life.
