(University of Rochester photo \/ Michelle Kleinhammer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The lab is exploring techniques to induce remyelination\u2014rebuilding nerves\u2019 ability to form sheaths for improved conduction\u2014to help combat neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington\u2019s disease and multiple sclerosis. Cruz focused on epigenetic work, using bioinformatics tools to compare regions of the genome where histone modifications can alter the regulation and transcription of DNA across different cell samples. He says the work has been enlightening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a steep learning curve but really interesting work and I\u2019m glad I got to be a part of it,\u201d says Cruz, who studied physics and international relations at Florida International University. \u201cI want to continue building my skills in coding and machine learning because I think it\u2019s a really cool tool to apply in the field of medicine. I feel really grateful for the lab, the people I\u2019ve met here, and my data science cohort in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cruz is part of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/dsc\/graduate\/genomics-cohorts\/index.html\">cohort<\/a> of Genomic Intensive Data Science Research, Education, and Mentorship (GIDS-REM) fellows. The program, partially funded by the National Institutes for Health, provides students on the genomics track full-tuition scholarships, guarantees them internships, and connects them with mentors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote\"><span style=\"font-size: 400%;\">\u201c<\/span>In my mind, data science is one of the most powerful tools that a scientist can leverage.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/112362718-samuel-norman-haignere\">Samuel Norman-Haignere<\/a>, an assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/biostat.aspx\">biostatistics and computational biology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/\">biomedical engineering<\/a>, and neuroscience, is one of Cruz\u2019s mentors and connected him with the internship.
