The goal should be to make it better and part of the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Lipomi, chemical engineers are critical to environmental protection efforts such as improving green energy production methods like solar and wind, developing lithium-ion batteries, and making heat exchange in computation more efficient. \u201cI believe chemical engineering is at the center of the bullseye in society\u2019s efforts to solve our looming environmental threats,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>As the new chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/che\/index.html\">Department of Chemical Engineering<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a>, Lipomi has made it his mission to educate the public about the field\u2019s promise while helping aspiring academics understand the intricacies of higher education. A prolific podcaster, he reaches thousands of people each month who are interested in chemical engineering and academia through his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/darren_lipomi\">X account<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@djlipomi\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WbP4Fvix1-Y?si=QN6e6JzFLJpJ8SJN\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lipomi has posted more than 200 videos to his YouTube channel since he began it in 2017 and hopes to accelerate his pace now that he is in a new role and setting. Sharing candid experiences from his career, the episodes\u2019 topics range from lessons from his <a href=\"https:\/\/books.rsc.org\/books\/monograph\/2172\/Introduction-to-Nanoengineering\"><em>Introduction to Nanoengineering<\/em><\/a> textbook to how graduate students can navigate difficult situations such as changing their advisor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel strongly that education should be a public good and this is an outlet for me to share what I\u2019ve learned with the world at large,\u201d says Lipomi.<\/p>\n<h3>Returning to Rochester at an opportune time<\/h3>\n<p>Lipomi came to the University of Rochester from the University of California\u2014San Diego, where he served as a professor in the nanoengineering and chemical engineering departments and as the dean for students at Jacobs School of Engineering. Joining the faculty at Rochester was a homecoming and the fulfillment of a long-term dream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe University of Rochester has a special place in my heart,\u201d says Lipomi, a native of nearby Hilton, New York. \u201cWhen I was a junior in high school, I went on a field trip to a chemistry lab here that was doing organic electronics. They were distilling tetrahydrofuran in a flask and there were fluorescent materials, and I was like \u2018Sold. That\u2019s what I want to do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he always aspired to return to his roots if the right opportunity arose\u2014and in his new role, he joins a program with a rich history at an exciting inflection point.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Rochester\u2019s chemical engineering program originated in 1915 and was among the first in the country, closely tied to the city\u2019s industry expertise in photography and xerography. Lipomi points out the department has been home to a bevy of influential researchers over the years, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/che\/people\/emeritus_faculty\/tang_ching\/index.html\">Ching Wan Tang<\/a>, a professor emeritus who developed the first practical organic light emitting diode (OLED) while at Kodak.<\/p>\n<p>Although the program\u2019s close historic ties with Kodak and Xerox waned with the companies\u2019 declines near the turn of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, Lipomi says a recent influx of early-career faculty with cutting-edge expertise has positioned the department to be at the forefront of research in some of chemical engineering\u2019s most exciting fronts. Six of the department\u2019s 14 staff joined in the past two years alone, establishing new research programs in areas including catalysis and biochemical engineering.<\/p>\n<p>For chemical engineering students, he sees Rochester as an attractive destination due to the department\u2019s 8-to-1 ratio of students to faculty, guaranteed research experiences for all undergraduates, a <a href=\"http:\/\/hajim.rochester.edu\/che\/undergraduate\/accelerated-path-to-ms.html\">combined bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s program<\/a>, and close proximity to collaborators at the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/index.html\">Institute of Optics<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_622112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-622112\" style=\"width: 1191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-622112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chemistry-vs-chemical-engineering-art-in-STEM-most-embarrassing-interview-moments-PodCAT-xover-YouTube-10-09-2024_12_22_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen shows a Zoom call with four people.\" width=\"1191\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chemistry-vs-chemical-engineering-art-in-STEM-most-embarrassing-interview-moments-PodCAT-xover-YouTube-10-09-2024_12_22_PM.png 1191w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chemistry-vs-chemical-engineering-art-in-STEM-most-embarrassing-interview-moments-PodCAT-xover-YouTube-10-09-2024_12_22_PM-630x354.png 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chemistry-vs-chemical-engineering-art-in-STEM-most-embarrassing-interview-moments-PodCAT-xover-YouTube-10-09-2024_12_22_PM-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chemistry-vs-chemical-engineering-art-in-STEM-most-embarrassing-interview-moments-PodCAT-xover-YouTube-10-09-2024_12_22_PM-340x191.png 340w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Chemistry-vs-chemical-engineering-art-in-STEM-most-embarrassing-interview-moments-PodCAT-xover-YouTube-10-09-2024_12_22_PM-660x371.png 660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1191px) 100vw, 1191px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-622112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On a recent \u201ccrossover\u201d episode of the PodCAT podcast, Darren Lipomi joined with Rochester colleage Marc Porosoff, Tom Senftle from Rice University, and Ezra Clark from Penn State University to discuss chemistry versus chemical engineering, art in STEM, and other topics.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=45YBDvmVkhI\">Watch the episode<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the faculty, Lipomi has also found kindred spirits who are equally passionate about science communication and discussing their experiences with the world. Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/che\/people\/faculty\/porosoff_marc\/index.html\">Marc Porosoff<\/a>, for example, hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/podcat\/id1652952627\">PodCAT<\/a>, a monthly podcast about heterogeneous catalysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRochester faculty host two of the three main chemical engineering podcasts, so we\u2019ve kind of got a corner on the market,\u201d Lipomi jokes.<\/p>\n<h3>Recalibrating his research focus<\/h3>\n<p>The move to Rochester also allowed Lipomi to reprioritize his research, doubling down on areas he\u2019s had success in while pursuing new questions. One of the research projects he is most excited to pursue is haptic holography, or the ability to feel light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the coolest science\/technology discovery I\u2019ve ever played a role in is that you can feel mechanical sensations arising from a desktop slide projector on your skin via the photoacoustic effect,\u201d says Lipomi, describing findings from a <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/advs.202403690\">study<\/a> recently published in <em>Advanced Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He and his team at UC San Diego were able to demonstrate that humans can feel changes in pulsed light and that certain dyes can augment the effect.
