{"id":643362,"date":"2025-03-14T15:09:18","date_gmt":"2025-03-14T19:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/?p=643362"},"modified":"2025-03-14T15:09:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T19:09:18","slug":"open-letter-republic-of-consciousness-prize-melvill-translation-643362","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/open-letter-republic-of-consciousness-prize-melvill-translation-643362\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Letter wins Republic of Consciousness Prize for English translation of <em>Melvill<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Rochester\u2019s literary translation press published <\/strong><strong>Rodrigo Fres\u00e1n\u2019s<\/strong><strong> invented biography of Herman Melville<\/strong><strong>, translated by alumnus Will Vanderhyden.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/\"><strong>Open Letter<\/strong><\/a>, the nonprofit, literary translation press at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\"><strong>University of Rochester<\/strong><\/a>, has earned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicofconsciousnessprize-usa.com\/news\">2024 Republic of Consciousness Prize<\/a> (United States and Canada) for the English translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/products\/melvill-1?_pos=1&amp;_sid=4f2c0dc7c&amp;_ss=r\"><em>Melvill<\/em><\/a> <em>(<\/em>October 2024) by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openletterbooks.org\/collections\/rodrigo-fresan\"><strong>Rodrigo Fres\u00e1n<\/strong><\/a>. Awarded in North America annually since 2022, the prize celebrates the commitment of independent presses to fiction of exceptional literary merit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReaders will know from the array of footnotes on the first few pages that this book is for the head,\u201d writes prize judge Dorian Stuber, an English professor at Hendrix College. \u201cBut the further they get into its gorgeous prose, so dizzyingly translated by Will Vanderhyden, the more they will see that it\u2019s also for the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prize represents not just a win for the press but also for the book\u2019s translator, Vanderhyden \u201913 (MA), an alumnus of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/lts\/graduate\/malts.html\"><strong>University\u2019s master of arts in literary translation program<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_569652\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-569652\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-569652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/inline-chad-post-black-and-white.jpg\" alt=\"Black and white photo of Chad Post in the left of the frame looking directy at the camera.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/inline-chad-post-black-and-white.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/inline-chad-post-black-and-white-630x630.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/inline-chad-post-black-and-white-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-569652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chad Post. (Photo provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honor,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/communications\/media\/profiles\/?username=chad.post\"><strong>Chad Post<\/strong><\/a>, who heads up\u00a0Open Letter. What pleases Post particularly is that the quirky idea of Spanish fiction\u2019s taking on an American author resonated with the judges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually, it goes the opposite direction in which American authors are writing about the Spanish. A book about Cervantes from an American author would raise no eyebrows, but a Spanish author writing about Melville kind of does,\u201d says Post. \u201cThe fact that this book is so wonderfully executed and translated\u2014and then honored in this way\u2014means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frequently the books he selects for publication, or their translators, have some form of personal connection. In this case, Post taught then-budding translator Vanderhyden in two of his graduate classes at Rochester. And while Post had met\u00a0Fres\u00e1n years earlier, it was only when Vanderhyden promoted the author in one of his classes that Post started paying closer attention.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to today: Having translated six works by Fres\u00e1n so far, Vanderhyden has become comfortable with the Argentinian author\u2019s style. \u201cBut tracking down his incessant literary and pop culture references and recreating his ludic sensibility\u2014his sense of humor, his tireless wordplay\u2014in English are and will always be particularly challenging aspects of translating his work,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n<p>Fres\u00e1n\u2019s <em>Melvill <\/em>is an invented biography\u2014a gothic novel of sorts, populated by ghosts\u2014about American novelist Herman Melville (1819\u20131891), best known for his 1851 epic novel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.ca\/books\/323502\/moby-dick-by-herman-melville\/9780141199603\"><em><strong>Moby-Dick<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Open Letter bills <em>Melvill<\/em>(Melville\u2019s mother added the \u201ce\u201d after her husband\u2019s death to the family name) as\u00a0\u201can evocation of a filial love,\u201d containing \u201call the talent, humor, and immense culture found in the other great works from one of Spanish literature\u2019s most ambitious writers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides being an important award that honors the trifecta of author, translator, and publisher, the Consciousness Prize also draws attention to the book itself because many of the judges are booksellers, says Post. \u201cIt\u2019ll help sell the book in their stores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <em>Melvill<\/em> is a finalist for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookcritics.org\/2024\/12\/19\/2024-nbcc-awards-longlist-barrios-book-in-translation-prize\/\"><strong>2024 Barrios Book in Translation Prize<\/strong><\/a>, awarded annually by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookcritics.org\/\"><strong>National Book Critics Circle<\/strong><\/a>. That decision is due later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s translation press, while small, boasts a surprisingly large number of winning books and authors, among them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/jon-fosse-septology-melancholy-english-translation-569552\/\"><strong>Nobel Prize winner Jon Fosse<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(2023) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/open-letter-winter-in-sokcho-national-book-awards-finalist-495132\/\"><strong>National Book Award\u2013winning translator Elisa Shua
