In addition to her two bachelor\u2019s degrees\u2014in neuroscience and nursing\u2014and an MBA, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> provided Cooke with confidence, resilience, a sense of belonging, and even the love of her life.\r\n\r\n\u201cI have a dog named Eastman. In between caring for critically ill patients at the Medical Center, she finds time to volunteer with <a href=\"https:\/\/thecollective.rochester.edu\/v2\/\">The Meliora Collective<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/alumni\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Volunteer-Opportunity-Nominations53.pdf\">Rochester Network Leadership Council<\/a>,\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/advancement\/womens-network\/\">Women\u2019s Network.<\/a> She has also served as chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/alumni\/stay-connected\/young-alumni\/young-alumni-council\/\">Young Alumni Council<\/a> and her fifth-year Reunion Committee and is an emeritus member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/alumni\/alumni-board\/\">Alumni Board<\/a>.\r\n\r\nLiving now in the Rochester suburb of Fairport, Cooke and her husband, Tyler Viterise \u201914, also made sure to include the University and the city in their September 2024 nuptials. While her father was familiar with Rochester\u2019s Medical Center, it wasn\u2019t until the backstroke and freestyle specialist was recruited for the swim team that she asked, \u201cWhat is this place?\u201d\r\n\r\nWhen she visited campus with her family on a \u201cgorgeous fall day\u201d in October of 2009, right during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/advancement\/meliora-weekend\/\">Meliora Weekend<\/a>, she says it felt like the quintessential college campus experience. \u201cEveryone was on the quad having fun. People were walking around and throwing a football. I think there was an engineering pumpkin launch happening on one of the quads, and I was like, \u2018This is it.\u2019\u00a0 You kind of get that feeling where you\u2019re home.\u201d\r\n\r\nCooke applied <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.rochester.edu\/applying\/first-year-students\/\">Early Decision<\/a> and then began waiting by the mailbox. \u201cIt was one of those surreal moments,\u201d she says of finally receiving the news that she\u2019d been accepted. \u201cSomeone believed in me. They saw my resume. They saw my grades. They saw what I did and said, \u2018Let\u2019s give her a shot.\u2019 It was one of those opportunities where I knew I had to work hard.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe transition from high school to college proved not without challenges, making for a difficult first semester. Cooke struggled initially to find where she fit in but eventually established a tight-knit network of friends through <a href=\"https:\/\/uofrathletics.com\/sports\/womens-swimming-and-diving\/roster\/farrell-cooke\/1768\">swimming<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/rochester.deltagamma.org\/\">Delta Gamma<\/a> sorority.\r\n<h3>The power of \u2018no\u2019<\/h3>\r\nCooke also felt intimidated at Rochester because\u2014as she tells it\u2014her peers were \u201cextremely intelligent, extremely brilliant people\u201d with whom she was trying to keep up. \u201cI vividly remember one of my science classes. I didn\u2019t get too hot of a grade, and one of my professors told me, \u2018You know what? Maybe we need to rethink medicine. Maybe you\u2019re not wired that way,\u2019\u201d she recalls.\r\n\r\nRather than giving up on her dreams, Cooke decided to work harder and change how she studied. \u201cI wasn\u2019t going to let one test score define who I was as a student here. Just like U of R took a chance on me, I needed to make sure I was showing up for them every day,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s probably the strongest \u2018no\u2019 I\u2019ve ever gotten in my life. And it\u2019s taken me the furthest.\u201d\r\n\r\nNow, as an active member of the Rochester community, she\u2019s hoping to instill that same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/odos\/meliora-vision-values\/index.html\">Meliora<\/a> spirit in the current generation of students and beyond.","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image_gallery","anchor_id":"","css_classes":"","overline":"","title":"","content":"","above_below":"above","background_color":"","images":[645882,647712,645892,647702,645912],"caption":"yes","credit":"no"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"","title":"","content":"\u201cWhat\u2019s amazing about Rochester, and something that really hits home for me, is the fact that I wasn\u2019t a shoo-in to be here,\u201d Cooke says. \u201cAnd being able to talk to students\u2014for people to see that I was an undergrad and I\u2019m a nurse and I have a business degree\u2014and to tell them that you can be, too, not only brings me joy and more love for this city and the school but allows me to give back too.\r\n\r\n\u201cRochester made me the person that I am today. And I want to be able to give that to students who maybe are struggling the same
