Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/psc\/people\/view.php?fid=1\">Gerald Gamm<\/a>, a professor of political science and of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/\">history<\/a> and the associate chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/psc\/index.html\">Department of Political Science<\/a>, has won an award for the best paper presented at a professional conference in 2024 on the subject of state politics\u2014together with his coauthor <a href=\"https:\/\/polisci.columbia.edu\/content\/justin-h-phillips\">Justin Phillips<\/a>, the Eaton Professor of Political Science at Columbia University.<\/p>\n<p>The prize, awarded annually by the <a href=\"https:\/\/apsanet.org\/membership\/organized-sections\/organized-section-awards\/past-awards\/section-22\/#paper\">State Politics and Policy Section<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/apsanet.org\/\">American Political Science Association<\/a>, is for their paper \u201cParty Reform and the Origins of Abortion Politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gamm\u2019s research focuses on institutional development and historical change in the United States. (Photo provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/people\/faculty\/luo_jiebo\/index.html\">Jiebo Luo<\/a>, a professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/index.html\">computer science<\/a>\u00a0and the Albert Arendt Hopeman Professor of Engineering, was inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering\u2019s (AIMBE) College of Fellows. College membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering and medicine research, practice, or education, and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making significant advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering, or developing\/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education.<\/p>\n<p>Luo was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for outstanding contributions to artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in medical image computing and predictive modeling of health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Luo was formally inducted during a ceremony held during the AIMBE Annual Event on March 31, along with 171 colleagues who make up the AIMBE College of Fellows Class of 2025.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/twitter-mirrors-attitudes-and-feelings-about-covid-19-445762\/\">Read about Luo\u2019s work to use machine learning and data mining to understand public sentiment toward COVID-19<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"malstrom\"><strong>Hans Malmstrom named Academy of Osseointegration Fellow<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hans Malmstrom, a professor of dentistry and chair of General Dentistry at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, was inducted as a fellow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/osseo.org\/\">Academy of Osseointegration<\/a> (AO) at the organization\u2019s annual meeting in March.<\/p>\n<p>Malmstrom joins <a href=\"https:\/\/osseo.org\/fellows-of-the-academy-of-osseointegration\/\">a select group of 118 AO fellows worldwide<\/a>, including five from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/112358622-hans-s-malmstrom\">Find out more about Malmstrom on his faculty page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"mathis\"><strong>Myra Mathis receives Courage to Heal Award<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Myra Mathis \u201909, \u201915M (MD), an assistant professor of psychiatry, was honored by Thomas Jefferson University as a pioneer in compassionate and patient-centered care.<\/p>\n<p>Mathis presented the Courage to Heal Medicine Grand Rounds at the university in February as part of the award ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>An addiction psychiatrist, Mathis serves as medical director for Strong Recovery, UR Medicine&#8217;s outpatient dual-diagnosis clinic, which offers an opioid treatment program and a full range of addiction and psychiatric services.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/112362474-myra-l-mathis\">Visit Mathis\u2019s faculty page for more about her research and clinical expertise<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"mthope\"><strong>Mt. Hope Family Center earns AFP Gold Medal <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psych.rochester.edu\/MHFC\/\">Mt. Hope Family Center<\/a> continues to receive national recognition for its important work supporting children and families with evidence-based intervention and prevention services.<\/p>\n<p>Jennie Noll, a professor of psychology and executive director of the Mt. Hope Family Center; Sheree Toth, a professor of psychology and psychiatry and former executive director of the Mt. Hope Family Center; and Dante Cicchetti, founder of the Mt. Hope Family Center and a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota, will receive the 2025 American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award for Impact in Psychology.\u00a0 The APF, the philanthropic arm of the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/\">American Psychological Association<\/a>, administers scholarships and research grants to students and early career psychologists.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognizes work that is impactful, innovative, and transformational. According to the APF, the award can be for a body of work in a particular field that has led to change or for one-moment-in-time psychology game changers. Gold medal recipients typically receive a monetary prize and a travel stipend to attend the APA Convention to receive a plaque. Nelson\u2019s research focus includes the role of lipids in human health and disease.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/people\/112364587-andrew-t-nelson\">Read more about Nelson and his research.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"rucci\"><strong>Michele Rucci\u2019s study on blinking honored for excellence\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A paper by Rochester scientists has been awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/about\/cozzarelli-prize?gad_source=1&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAqiPmCys3NZWy4oSvhlgqrJ6rW44a\">Cozzarelli Prize<\/a> by the \u00a0<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.2310291121\">Eye Blinks as a Visual Processing Stage<\/a>, authored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bcs\/people\/faculty\/rucci_michele\/index.html\">Michele Rucci<\/a>, a professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and graduate students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/bcs\/people\/students\/yang_bin\/index.html\">Bin Yang<\/a> and Janis Intoy<u>, <\/u>was awarded the Biological Sciences honor for the research that found that blinking plays a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/why-blinking-eyes-is-important-visual-processing-599212\/\">pivotal role<\/a> in allowing our brains to process visual information.<\/p>\n<p>The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/about\/cozzarelli-prize\">Cozarrelli Prize<\/a> is awarded to six research teams whose PNAS articles have made outstanding contributions to their field. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasonline.org\/news\/2024-cozzarelli-recipients\/\">award announcement<\/a>, papers were chosen from 3,200 research articles that appeared in the journal last year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/why-blinking-eyes-is-important-visual-processing-599212\/\">Find out why blinking is so important.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"width: 50%;\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"sierrasilva\">Pablo Sierra Silva\u2019s book included on Best Historical Materials list<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/his\/people\/faculty\/sierra_pablo\/index.html\">Pablo Sierra Silva<\/a>&#8216;s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/hackettpublishing.com\/mexico-slavery-freedom\"><em>Mexico, Slavery, Freedom: A Bilingual Documentary History, 1520\u20131829<\/em><\/a>, was selected by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/\">American Library Association<\/a> for its\u00a02024 Best Historical Materials\u00a0listing.<\/p>\n<p>The book, featuring an introduction and 118 documents in English and Spanish, was curated after a decade of teaching courses on the history of Latin America and the African diaspora at Rochester. (Photo provided)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers from the Department of Computer Science won a best paper award at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asplos-conference.org\/asplos2025\/\">ACM International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems<\/a>\u00a0(ASPLOS) 2025, a premier venue for computer systems. The paper, selected out of 912 entries, was authored by computer science PhD student Weikai Lin, Yu Feng \u201923, and \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/people\/faculty\/zhu_yuhao\/index.html\">Yuhao Zhu<\/a>, an associate professor of computer science.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, \u201cMetaSapiens: Real-Time Neural Rendering with Efficiency-Aware Pruning and Accelerated Foveated Rendering,\u201d proposes a new rendering system that leverages characteristics of the human visual system. For the first time, the system achieves real-time photorealistic rendering on untethered virtual reality devices. The team plans to extend the work to augmented reality, which poses an even greater problem than VR.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/horizon-lab.org\/pubs\/asplos25.pdf\">Read the award-winning
