I met so many people who knew what I was going through and were accepting of a transfer student. It didn\u2019t take long to feel like I fit in.\u201d\r\n\r\nSpangler has thrived in her three years at URochester. The American Sign Language<\/a> major from Jamestown, New York, is an orientation leader, president of the Transfer Student Organization, and a member of the sorority Gamma Phi Beta. She also works as an usher at Kodak Hall on the Eastman School of Music<\/a> campus and as a dishwasher at the Interfaith Chapel on the River Campus.\r\n\r\nShe\u2019s one of hundreds of transfer students enjoying a second act at URochester. The University enrolls between 60 and 90 transfers each fall, plus more in the spring. About 65 percent receive an average of $14,000 in merit scholarships, which renew annually if the student maintains satisfactory academic performance and full-time status.\r\n\r\n\u201cIt\u2019s never too late to start your University of Rochester journey,\u201d says Rob Alexander, vice provost and University dean for enrollment. \u201cNew transfer students are valued additions to the URochester community. He has taken advantage of URochester\u2019s flexible curriculum to explore several interests outside his major. \u201cI\u2019ve taken courses in math, anthropology, linguistics, political science, and psychology,\u201d he says. \u201cMy favorite class was one called \u2018Incarceration Nation,\u2019 which has nothing to do with my major but was fascinating.\u201d\r\n\r\nThis year, Loftus is taking part in the University\u2019s unique Take Five Scholars Program<\/a>, which offers undergraduate students a chance to pursue an additional year of tuition-free study in an academic field that interests them.\r\n\r\nSpangler says the freedom to choose was \u201ca game changer\u201d in deciding to enroll at URochester. \u201cI knew I wanted to pursue other passions like music and astronomy,\u201d she says. \u201cThe curriculum allowed me to take courses in those subjects while still pursuing my degree.\u201d\r\n\r\nNewt Perlman \u201926, an electrical and computer engineering major, says the flexible curriculum was the \u201cdeciding factor\u201d when he transferred from NYU Shanghai after one year. \u201cIt makes Rochester one of the best colleges possible to transfer to,\u201d he says. \u201cWith any other college, I likely would have had to overload and take an extra semester or year, and I wouldn\u2019t have had time to take any classes outside of my degree.\u201d","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"mt-0 pt-0","title":"","content":"2. There\u2019s a program for virtually every interest and career goal.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nAccording to the Office of the University Registrar<\/a>, there are nearly 130 academic programs<\/a> offered to undergraduates at the School of Arts & Sciences<\/a> and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences<\/a>.\r\n\r\nPerlman studied computer science at NYU Shanghai but quickly realized he was more excited about designing and building the hardware. \u201cI wanted to switch my major to electrical and computer engineering, and my school didn\u2019t offer it, but Rochester did,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd everyone here made it an easy transition, especially coming from a foreign school to an American university.\u201d\r\n\r\nSpangler heard about URochester\u2019s American Sign Language program<\/a> from a professor at Jamestown. \u201cIt had everything I wanted,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd there is a huge deaf population in Rochester. Research opportunities abound across the University.<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nURochester is widely regarded as a world-leading research institution, with more than 500 labs across its Medical Center and River Campus. Student involvement in research can start in the first semester of college. According to the Office of Undergraduate Research<\/a>, more than 1,200 students have been in paid research positions since 2020, and nearly 1,400 courses have been administered for research credit.\r\n\r\nDabne Herrera Guerra \u201927 and fellow transfer student Maria Ahmed \u201926 were chosen last spring as Beckman Scholars<\/a>, which provides selected URochester biological and chemical sciences majors the chance to conduct independent laboratory research under the mentorship of University faculty.\r\nAbout 65 percent of transfer students to URochester receive merit scholarships.<\/div>\r\nAhmed\u2019s first URochester experience came the summer before she enrolled as a transfer student, after transferring from nearby Rochester Institute of Technology.
