Can AR\/VR help improve classroom engagement and interaction? Can it be used to teach piano?<\/p>\n<p>This semester, dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/\">University of Rochester<\/a> students set out to answer these questions\u2014and many more\u2014as part of the Introduction to Augmented and Virtual Reality class taught by Daniel Nikolov, an adjunct professor and research engineer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/optics\/index.html\">Institute of Optics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spanning optics, computer science, brain and cognitive sciences, and other disciplines, the students not only received a holistic look at the rapidly developing technologies but also got a chance to use the latest hardware including Meta Quest headsets and Snap Spectacles. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis class gives us a broad perspective of AR\/VR,\u201d says Jiamu Tang \u201926, a data science student minoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/undergraduate\/degree-requirements.html#minor\">computer science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.rochester.edu\/phl\/undergraduate\/minor.html\">philosophy<\/a>. \u201cSome really interesting guest lectures from researchers in optics, philosophy, eye perception, and other fields have given us the basic knowledge we need to conduct research or develop games and applications in AR\/VR. It\u2019s been amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tang developed an application for the Meta Quest she calls LinguaLens to help people learn a new language as they observe the world around them. She used the Quest\u2019s forward-facing cameras to present users a mixed reality view that labels their surroundings with relevant vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to create new opportunities for people to learn a new language,\u201d says Tang. \u201cWhen they are walking on the street, they can talk to the digital assistant, which will give them the context they need to learn new words and phrases. It\u2019s designed to be very easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tang said Studio X provided students critical support for the class, not only giving them access to the Meta Quest hardware, but also offering help learning Unity software to develop AR\/VR applications.<\/p>\n<h3>Broadening the scope<\/h3>\n<p>The Intro to AR\/VR class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/new-training-in-ar-vr-tech-gives-rochester-doctoral-students-an-edge-397062\/\">started six years ago<\/a> with funding from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505015\">National Science Foundation Research Traineeship program<\/a>, and has continually evolved since. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nikolov and the University solved the limitation by pursuing a partnership with Snap Inc. as one of CXR\u2019s first major achievements. Snap Inc. supplied new Snap Spectacles for Nikolov\u2019s class, as well as for a human-computer interaction course taught by Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/people\/faculty\/yan_yukang\/index.html\">Yukang Yan<\/a> this fall and an AR\/VR interaction design course to be taught in the spring by Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.rochester.edu\/people\/faculty\/bai-zhen\/index.html\">Zhen Bai<\/a>, the Biggar Family Fellow in Data Science.<\/p>\n<p>Addison Black, Spectacles producer at Snap Inc., says the partnership has been a win-win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that the platform of AR and Snap Spectacles can only really be made great by fantastic developers bringing new ideas and pushing the technology,\u201d says Black. \u201cWe\u2019ve found that the most successful and interesting use cases for Snap Spectacles have come from those new to the industry and students who were pushing the boundaries of what\u2019s possible. And so we were excited when we found the opportunity to collaborate with the University of Rochester and see the projects coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anakin de la Cruz Flecha \u201925 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/undergraduate\/index.html\">biomedical engineering<\/a>), who\u2019s pursuing his master\u2019s through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/graduate\/ms.html#center-for-medical-technology-and-innovation-ms\">Center for Medical Technology and Innovation program<\/a>, was excited by the chance to work with Snap Spectacles. Adam Fenster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Augmenting research<\/h3>\n<p>For George Kassis, the class provided a new dimension to enhance a long-term project he\u2019s developing for his MD-PhD program. Under the guidance of Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/people\/faculty\/castaneda-benjamin\/index.html\">Benjam\u00edn Casta\u00f1eda<\/a>\u00a0\u201909 (PhD) from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hajim.rochester.edu\/bme\/\">Department of Biomedical Engineering<\/a>, Kassis is creating a low-cost, autonomous, AI-powered robotic arm to perform ultrasound in rural areas without access to trained ultrasound professionals.
