In an effort to increase awareness of and participation in the democratic process, the University of Rochester\u2019s Committee for Political Engagement (CPE) held a two-day photo shoot on October 28-29 called #TurnOutForWhat.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the campaign is to document and share photos of Rochester students, faculty, and staff identifying what issues compel them to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign\u2019s hashtag plays on Lil Jon\u2019s hit song \u201cTurn Down for What.\u201d It was started in October by Rock the Vote, a national organization that works to get young people active in the voting process.<\/p>\n<p>CPE, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/civic\/political.html\">non-partisan student initiative<\/a> under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/college\/rccl\/\">Rochester Center for Community Leadership<\/a>, hosted its photo shoot on October 28 and 29 and posted the images to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.798166806908008.1073741830.789073021150720&amp;type=1\">Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-77172\" style=\"clear: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election4-193x117.jpg\" alt=\"Man holding a sign that reads I Turn Out to Vote because I can.\" width=\"193\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-77182\" style=\"clear: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election9-193x117.jpg\" alt=\"woman holding a sign that reads I Turn Out To Vote because we need change from both inside and outside the system.\" width=\"193\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-77192\" style=\"clear: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election12-193x117.jpg\" alt=\"man holding a sign that reads I Turn Out For equal access to a great education. \" width=\"193\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-77212\" style=\"clear: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/election1-193x117.jpg\" alt=\"woman holds sign that reads I Turn Out to Vote To Make a Change\" width=\"193\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\" \/><br \/>\nThe participants highlighted a range of issues important to them, from the general to the personal, including education reform, the economy, gun safety, and net neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>Committee member <strong>Jennifer Hansler \u201915<\/strong> says that it\u2019s essential for students to be politically engaged. \u201cWe are the second largest voting bloc in the United States, but we don&#8217;t use that collective power to leverage our demands,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe need to hold our elected officials accountable, and the most effective way to do that is through political activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The committee also organizes voter registration drives, forums with elected officials, debate watch events, political activism training, professor panels, and trips to presidential inaugurations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of young people care more about the issues themselves rather than conforming to party lines,\u201d says <strong>Riva Yeo \u201918<\/strong>, a political science major and CPE member. \u201cWe want to show people that change can happen\u2014and that it begins with your vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do I vote?<br \/>\n<\/strong>For students registered to vote in person in Rochester, the University\u2019s polling place is Helen Wood Hall, home of the School of Nursing and located across the street from Strong Hospital. On November 4th, the blue line bus runs every 20 minutes from the ITS stop behind Rush Rhees Library with a stop in front of Helen Wood Hall.
