Exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, Rochester will be the second university presentation of the piece <\/em><\/p>\n

WHAT:<\/strong> This situation<\/em> is a \u201cconstructed situation\u201d akin to a contemporary salon in which live interpreters, drawing on quotations selected from 500 years of thought, discuss among themselves and with visitors such issues as the aesthetics of existence and the implications of moving from a society of lack to a society of abundance.<\/p>\n

Since its New York premiere at Marian Goodman Gallery in 2007, This situation<\/em> has been produced in galleries and museums around the world. The work is held in the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Mus\u00e9e d’art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al. The presentation at Rochester will be the second time that it has been installed in an academic setting. The piece was previously produced at Princeton University in 2013.<\/p>\n

TIME, DATE, PLACE: <\/strong>Tuesday, Feb. 10 – Thursday, Feb. 12 from noon to 4 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 13 – Sunday, Feb. 15 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday, Feb. 16 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Hartnett Gallery on the University\u2019s River Campus. All events are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

RELATED EVENT: <\/strong>A symposium on Monday, Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. in the Gowan Room in Wilson Commons explores This situation<\/em> and Sehgal\u2019s work with the piece\u2019s producers, Asad Raza and Julia Simpson, as well as Heather Layton, artist and senior lecturer in art at Rochester, and Rachel Haidu, associate professor of art history and director of the graduate program in visual and cultural studies.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE ARTIST: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Tino Sehgal is a British\u2013German artist who constructs situations that defy the traditional context of museum and gallery environments, focusing on lived experience rather than on material objects. His works rely on the human voice, physical movement and social interaction. His recent works also include This variation<\/em>, which was presented at Documenta (13) in Kassel, Germany in 2012, and These associations<\/em>, which filled the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London. He has had major solo exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the ICA in London, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the German Pavilion of the 2005 Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n

ABOUT THE PRODUCERS:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Asad\u00a0Raza has contributed to many international exhibitions including\u00a0A stroll through a fun palace<\/em>\u00a0for the 2014 Venice Biennale for Architecture. He has produced many projects with the artist Tino Sehgal, including two of the largest and most influential live art exhibitions mounted to date,\u00a0This progress\u00a0<\/em>at\u00a0the Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010) and\u00a0These associations\u00a0<\/em>at\u00a0Tate Modern, London (2012).<\/p>\n

Julia Simpson is based in New York, where she works as an interdisciplinary producer, creative director, and filmmaker. Alongside Raza, she has installed and managed Tino Sehgal exhibitions at the Tate Modern, the Guggenheim, the Mus\u00e9e d’art contemporain de Montr\u00e9al, and Princeton University.<\/p>\n
