Association of Minority Residents & Fellows (AMRF)
The Association of Minority Residents and Fellows (AMRF) was created in 2014 by Dr. Charity I. Oyedeji and Dr. Ugo Awa, two exceptional former Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds) residents. These innovative leaders envisioned a safe space where underrepresented minorities in medicine and their allies would build a community to create a sense of belonging, feel heard, seek and provide mentorship, and address structural racism including experiences of implicit bias and microaggression in the healthcare system. Since its inception, AMRF has grown exponentially to include medical (MD/DO) trainees who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) and their allies across all fields and specialties at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can become a member or ally of AMRF?
Any current or former URMC resident or fellow (MD/DO) that support AMRF’s mission of advocating for the creation of psychologically safe spaces for black and brown colleagues is welcome to join AMRF.
A member is anybody that identifies as part of groups historically underrepresented in medicine (URiM). An ally is anybody that feels they do not meet these criteria but would still like to support AMRF’s mission as above. Both members and allies are invited to participate in our mentorship, networking and social events.
In addition, we encourage all members and allies to promote and support psychologically safe, culturally informed and socially conscious spaces within their individual departments across the University.
