The following is intended to be a general resource regarding passports and visas for researchers to consider as they plan their international research projects.\r\n<h2>Passports<\/h2>\r\nResearchers should ensure that they and any project staff that will travel to a foreign country for research have current passports.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>U.S. citizens can apply for a passport directly through the U.S. State Department. Please review the <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/passports\/how-apply\/processing-times.html\">processing times<\/a> and <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/passports\/get-fast.html\">expedited services<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Non-U.S. citizens can obtain a visa from the destination country\u2019s embassy or consulate in the U.S.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Passports should be valid for 6 months beyond the date of return.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Visas and work permits<\/h2>\r\nPrior to travel, researchers should also confirm applicable in-country visa requirements. A visa is required to travel to a foreign country unless the country offers a \u201cvisa waiver\u201d for certain types of travel and countries.\r\n\r\nWork conducted in a foreign country should be done under appropriate visa categories (such as academic, business, or research visas). Unless specifically allowable, work should not be conducted under a \u201ctourist\u201d or similar visa.\r\n\r\nUniversity researchers should remain in the foreign country in which they are conducting research for only so long as the applicable visa category allows. As some visas can take months to process, researchers should address applicable visa requirements early in their planning.\r\n\r\nResearchers may be required to show proof of evacuation and repatriation coverage to obtain a visa or other travel document. <a href=\"https:\/\/fs22.formsite.com\/URglobal\/CoverageRequest\/index.html?1508950349333\">Requests for proof of coverage may be made online<\/a>. In order to receive the proof of coverage letter, the travel must be considered \u201cUniversity-Sponsored or Supported Travel\u201d.\r\n\r\nReview the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/office-global-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/UR_International-Travel-Program-Development-Policy.pdf\">University\u2019s International Travel &amp; Program Development Policy<\/a> for information on the types of travel that are considered University-Sponsored or Supported Travel.\r\n<h2>VisaCentral Portal<\/h2>\r\nThe University has negotiated a reduced rate with <a href=\"https:\/\/visacentral.com\/?login=Rochester\">VisaCentral<\/a>, a visa and passport services vendor.
