{"id":181562,"date":"2026-01-29T17:03:52","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T22:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/parking\/?p=181562"},"modified":"2026-01-29T17:06:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T22:06:10","slug":"e-bike-and-e-scooter-safety-reminder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/parking\/e-bike-and-e-scooter-safety-reminder\/","title":{"rendered":"e-Bike and e-Scooter safety reminder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Members of the University Community,<\/p>\n<p>To support campus safety and ensure compliance with New York State law, the University is reminding the community of the requirements governing the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric bikes (e-bikes).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key Rules<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Use on Campus<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>E-scooters and e-bikes may be used for commuting to and from campus.<\/li>\n<li>Riding is permitted only on Library Road and Wilson Boulevard.<\/li>\n<li>Riding is prohibited on all other campus sidewalks, roadways, and indoor or outdoor campus spaces.<\/li>\n<li>Riders must dismount and park devices at designated perimeter dismount and outdoor parking zones.<\/li>\n<li>Per New York State law, e-scooters may not be operated on sidewalks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Buildings Restrictions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For safety and fire prevention, e-scooters and e-bikes <strong>cannot<\/strong> be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>taken into or ridden within University buildings<\/li>\n<li>stored in any building, including lobbies, offices, hallways, stairwells, or common areas<\/li>\n<li>charged inside buildings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Exception: storage is permitted only in designated rooms at Brooks Crossing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Important battery safety note<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since lithium-ion batteries themselves pose a fire risk, e-bike and e-scooter batteries are not permitted in any building or room that is not explicitly approved for their storage or charging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Outdoor Parking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University provides designated outdoor parking areas for e-scooters and e-bikes, which must be secured in these spaces. Maps of these areas are available in the University policy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Safety and Enforcement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>E\u2011scooters and e\u2011bikes pose a significant fire risk when stored or charged inside buildings and may obstruct evacuation routes during emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>Violations may result in fines, device confiscation, and\/or referral to the appropriate disciplinary process.
