Use of Volunteers

The University supports the use of volunteers who provide charitable services to hospitals and to other parts of the University. No volunteer, however, may perform work that is also performed by paid University employees.

Newly established positions or significantly changed existing positions will be classified by Human Resources. The appropriate position code and pay/salary grade will be assigned based on an analysis of the documented duties and responsibilities.

The University of Rochester provides two types of Leaves of Absence for staff members. University Leave of Absence May provide staff with up to 12 months’ unpaid leave for reasons such as education, dependent or elder care, or community service.

Paid Time Off (PTO) (Effective 01/01/2021)

Policy Number: 340

The intent of the PTO plan is to recognize an eligible employee's need to have time away from work for reasons such as illness or injury, doctor or dental appointments and to attend to personal business, and to provide the staff member with flexibility and tangible reward for time unused at the end of each Plan Year.

Staff members are entitled to time off without loss of base pay for each working day excused to 1) serve on jury duty or 2) when subpoenaed to appear in a court of law, except when the staff member is a primary party to the legal action or a prospective beneficiary of it.

The University's Benefits Program provides eight University paid holidays per year. Each holiday equals one-fifth of the individual’s standard weekly work hours.

Death in the Immediate Family or Household

Policy Number: 327

Time off without loss of base wage or salary will be granted to a regular full-time or part-time staff member who suffers the loss of an immediate family or household member to allow for participation in events related to the death and funeral.
