ESM PERFORMERS EXPLORE AVANT-GARDE FILM MUSICFaculty and students from the Eastman School and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany, have been engaged in an intriguing collaboration that explores the relationship between avant-garde film and music from the 1920s to the present. The project resulted in Cine-Musik, a pair of October concerts--in Rochester and Freiburg--that showcased classic art films accompanied by performers from both schools. The collaborating artists also performed one of the works on the program, George Antheil's Ballet Mechanique, at the Berliner Festwochen, a major Berlin music festival. Written for the Fernand LegerRené Clair film of the same name, the music--originally scored for two pianos, three xylophones, four bass drums, a siren, 12 electric bells, and three airplane propellers--set off a riot at its first performance. Cine-Musik was produced by Eastman's Professor of Saxophone Ramon Ricker and the Hochschule's Mathias Trapp. The exchange between the Rochester and Freiburg schools dates back to 1987. A 1997 concert featuring faculty and student artists and composers from the two institutions resulted in a soon-to-be-released CD on the Albany label.
