Asish Basu, professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest federation of scientists. . . . Jack Caton, director of the clinical postdoctoral certificate program in periodontology at the Eastman Dental Center, received the American Academy of Periodontology’s Gold Medal Award. . . . Susan Gustafson, professor of German and director of the Susan B. Anthony Center for Gender and Women’s Studies, has received the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) 2004 Book Prize from the German Studies Association, presented for the outstanding book on German language, literature, or cultural studies published during the preceding two years. Gustafson was honored for her work Men Desiring Men: The Poetry of Same-Sex Identity and Desire in German Classicism. . . . The Finger Lakes Regional Poison and Drug Information Center has been renamed in honor of Ruth Lawrence, professor of pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology and the program’s medical director since 1958. . . . Poet and critic James Longenbach, the Joseph H. Gilmore Professor of English, has been named the recipient of the Lillian Fairchild Award, an annual award presented by the Department of English to a Rochester-area resident for the best visual, literary, or musical work of art in the previous year. Longenbach was honored for his most recent volume of poems, Fleet River. . . . Robert McCrory, director of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics and professor of physics and professor of mechanical engineering, was elected as a fellow of the AAAS. . . René Millon, professor emeritus of anthropology, received the A. V. Kidder Prize from the American Anthropological Association for his contributions to mapping and excavating at Teotihuacán, Mexico. . . Duncan Moore, cofounder of the University’s Center for Optical Manufacturing and Rudolf and Hilda Kingslake Professor of Optical Engineering and professor of biomedical engineering, was elected as a fellow of the AAAS. . . . Susumu Okubo, professor of physics, has been selected to receive the 2005 American Physical Society’s J. J. Sakurai Prize in Theoretical Particle Physics, given annually to recognize outstanding achievement in particle theory, usually for contributions made at an early stage of the recipient’s research career. . . . Provost Charles E. Phelps has been elected chair of the Board of the Council on Library and Information Resources. . . . John Tarduno, professor and chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, gave the prestigious Bullard Lecture at last winter’s meeting of the American Geophysical Union.
