As is true anywhere, there are people out there who will attempt to take advantage of individuals by pretending to be someone they are not, but with a little knowledge, you can learn how to identify a scam and avoid falling victim to the scheme.<\/p>\n<h3>Understand\u00a0the\u00a0Threats: Common Scam\u00a0Tactics<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The caller ID or phone number looks like a government agency or police, and the caller may claim to be a government\u00a0representative.<\/li>\n<li>You may also receive a letter.<\/li>\n<li>The scammer may tell you that you owe money or have committed some kind of\u00a0fraud.<\/li>\n<li>The scammer will use fear, threats, and intimidation to get what they\u00a0want, which is access to your personal information. (credit or bank account information)<\/li>\n<li>The scammer may try to force you to take immediate\u00a0action.<\/li>\n<li>A scam that may include punishment (often threats of deportation or arrest) for not acting\u00a0immediately.<\/li>\n<li>A scammer will try to keep you on the phone for a long time and will not let you hang up to call back\u00a0later, in order to pressure you for personal information or account numbers.<\/li>\n<li>A scammer may ask for non-traditional payment methods such as gift\u00a0cards.<\/li>\n<li>A scammer will use lots of legal-sounding language such as \u201cfederal regulations\u201d and \u201cvisa fee\u201d to sound as legitimate as\u00a0possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Common\u00a0Scams<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Third-Party tax providers attempting to collect a refund that is rightfully yours.<\/li>\n<li>Rental scams where your deposit money is taken and no one meets you with the keys to move\u00a0in.<\/li>\n<li>Online scams, attempt to get credit card information when purchasing items on Craigslist or eBay or through PayPal.<\/li>\n<li>Calls demanding an \u201cinternational student tax\u201d or \u201cvisa fee\u201d which directs the victim to wire money or buy gift\u00a0cards.<\/li>\n<li>A website charging fees to enter the Green Card\u00a0Lottery.<\/li>\n<li>A scammer may pose as a government official (Embassy representative, consulate, or police) asking for money to \u201ctake care of a problem\u201d or to \u201chelp you get out of trouble.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Exercise\u00a0Caution<\/h3>\n<p>In general, no government agency or reputable company will call or email you unexpectedly and request your personal information, or request advance fees for services in the form of wire transfers or gift\u00a0cards.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Department of Homeland Security may call you regarding your SEVIS record, but they will never ask for money over the\u00a0phone.<\/li>\n<li>Verify the identity of anyone who asks for your personal information over the phone. Ask for a caller&#8217;s name, agency affiliation, ID or badge number, and phone number and request that you call them back or respond through the agency&#8217;s customer service channels.<\/li>\n<li>Do not cash checks that arrive in the mail\u00a0unexpectedly.<\/li>\n<li>Do not sign contracts without reading them and fully understanding the\u00a0content.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid providing personal data, such as banking information or your social security number, to unknown persons over the phone or the internet.<\/li>\n<li>Scammers may know basic information about you and use that as &#8216;proof,\u201d however this information is likely easily searchable online.\u00a0It&#8217;s a good idea to check how much of your information is public, such as your phone number and\u00a0address.<\/li>\n<li>If anyone pressures you to provide information or money over the phone, it&#8217;s a scam and you should just hang up.<\/li>\n<li>Notify the police or Public Safety if you have any questions or think you may have been scammed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Secure\u00a0Your\u00a0Information<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Store your Social Security card, Passport, and important documents in a secure location; avoid carrying them with you.<\/li>\n<li>Shred documents that list personal information such as your Social Security number and banking\u00a0information.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid opening emails from unknown sources or clicking on suspicious\u00a0hyperlinks.<\/li>\n<li>Equip your computing devices with strong anti-virus software and maintain strong\u00a0passwords.<\/li>\n<li>Regularly check your credit reports for suspicious\u00a0activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>International Students<\/h3>\n<p>Report Anything Suspicious to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iso.rochester.edu\/\">International Student Office (ISO)<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you receive a concerning or suspicious\u00a0call.<\/li>\n<li>If a letter arrives in the mail which includes threats for not\u00a0acting.<\/li>\n<li>If an employer is acting unethically by requiring you to pay money to receive a job offer, or an employment agency is offering to create fake\u00a0credentials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remember: <\/strong>when one person reports a scam, ISO can alert all of our international students and\u00a0scholars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Report Anything Suspicious\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/public-safety\/\">Department of Public Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While at Rochester we hope that you will not be contacted by someone attempting to scam or defraud you.
